.250/3000 question
« on: May 04, 2010, 12:30:57 PM »
I haven't been here in a while, I actually forgot my password and just now found the reset password option.Anyway, I have found another 22 hornet barrel which I have no use for and I got to thinking after seeing my father shooting his all original 1928 Savage in .250/3000 if I could possibly rechamber the .22 Hornet barrel into the .250 caliber? Thanks.

Since the 22 hornet is .224 and the 250/3000 is .257 bore, there can not be a simple rechambering job one. there is a way if you have a heavy barreled 22 hornet (not the Ultra Light). Get the bore opened to .257 and then chambered to the 250 Savage, er 250/3000. It will cost you in the neighborhood of $300+ and some wait time.

Oh sorry that I did not mention it but it is the heavy barreled hornet.

Superlight or otherwise, it will still need to be rebored to .257" for the 250-3000. I had a 243 Superlight barrel rebored to .264" for a 260 Remington, there's plenty of barrel to do so, minimum muzzle diameter of .550" is required for up to a .375" bore using a modern H&R 4140 centerfire barrel.

If you go the re-bore route. A 257 Roberts would be another excelent choice. I had a 223 Ultra done in that manner. That Handi is one of my favorite deer rifles, specially for running off hand shots.
There is a picture somewhere around here.

I am not saying that there is something wrong with the 250-3000.

I know this isnt really to your question, but.....There are a number of very nice, larger capacity .22CF cartridges that you could rechamber to and get increased performance while still having something unique (for a lot less money).
.218 Bee ( rimmed, better than Hornet, still relatively quiet)
.219 Zipper (my choice, rimmed, 30-30 brass works)
And isnt there one based on .357Mag or Maxi brass?
And many more.

Well the only reason why I would want it in the 250-3000 caliber is that my father likes that caliber and wants another rifle in said caliber. I just thought maybe since I have this extra barrel laying around that it might could be possible to get it done and then surprise him with it. But it sounds that it would be a whole heck of a lot more trouble and money than its worth.

I however been thinking of getting my .22 hornet redone into the .22K hornet, I might just have to do it with this barrel and that way I would have one of each.

 Thanks for the replies.

IMHO the 22K Hornet is a real step up from the 22 Hornet. Not because of more velocity, but you get longer case life and you get a real shoulder to head space on so your accuracy potential is improved. The down side is dies cost more and you have to fire form cases for them to preform their best.

Here are a few groups shot from my 22K Hornet Handi using different bullets and powders. Doesn't do too bad with any of them, but I have settled on W296 and 34 grain MidSouth bullet.

+1 that, but I wish you had also noted the distance.  If I assume that is 50yd., I'd be right?.

I agree. I also wish he had noted the distance.

Just thinking here maybe to myself, did new england arms ever produce a .220 swift barrel? If not how hard would it be or if at all possible to get a 220 swift barrel? I was thinking since they are both .224 diameter it shouldn't be that hard or not as hard taking a .224 diameter and boring it out to .257 diameter.

Those targets were shot at 100 yards, well actually 107 yards by my range finder. I thought I was shooting at 100 until I got the bushy range finder. Now I shoot at 100 yards.

Edit: 220 response

I do not think that H&R ever did a 220 swift, but a 22 Hornet can be chambered for a 220 Swift and an ejector change/modification. Makeing a .257 bore is a matter of boring to an under size and then rifling to .257" then chamber to what you want 250 Savage, 257 Roberts, 25-06, etc.  Look at Tim's posting above with the links to see a gunsmith that does this kind of work and prices.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

.223,.224,.225.....no difference in a re-bore to 25 cal.
If re-bore is what you want to do get the cheapest barrel in the profile and length you want.

I am confused here, 'coarse that don't take a whole lot. It is a whole lot cheaper to chamber a round to a bigger case. If you have a .224" bore you can chamber to a different case that is bigger with the same bore (.224") for, give or take, $100. If you have a .224" or a .243" bore and you want to make it say a .257" bore you have to have someone drill out the bore and then cut rifling into the just opened bore, then chamber to a case that is bigger than the case was originally for North of $300. A 308 barrel could not be made into a 357 barrel, because the 308 case is bigger around than a 357 case is and longer. Or a 30-06 can not be made into a 32-20, or a .223 into a 32 H&R Mag. Or a 30-06 could not be made into a 250 Savage. So just any barrel will not work. A 22 Hornet barrel could be made into any of the above mentioned bore/case combination. You just have to think about the combination before you could enlarge the bore.

Well, only because the OP started by asking about 25 cal., and we keep coming back to talk of 25 cal.s.....
