Practical Rifle Class with a lever action
« on: May 04, 2010, 02:15:37 PM »
I am attending a Practical Rifle shooting class later this year. The instructor asks that we bring a bolt action rifle or certain lever actions. I am using this class to re-learn how to shoot as a righty. I've been shooting lefty for 23 years. I don't own a bolt but thought about using a Browning BLR in 7mm-08. This class has us shooting 600 rounds in 2 days. Do you think the BLR will hold accuracy? Or, should I look for a used RH bolt for this class?

Thanks!!

BRL:  what lever actions did the instructor say to bring?????  The BRL in 7-08 sounds like a lovely and finely made sporting rifle made for hunting, hunting accuracy and light weight for easy of carry.  With all due respect to Browning rifles it does not sound like the rifle I would take to a practical shooting course that will burn through 600 rnds in two days.  I think that is just a bit beyond the rifle.  She may hold though - that is, the action may still function but it may also seize due to heat and the barrel may still shoot with accuracy but that would be a terrible thing to do to a BRL.

This is not to say that after a total of 600 rounds a BRL would not continue to function and shoot, but after 600 rounds over a period of just two days you are liable to put a serious hurt on that rifle.

I would ask what lever actions he was referring to.

I took a long barrelled AK to a Appleseed shoot and ran through almost 600 rounds over that weekend without any problems for either me or the rifle (except that my left arm was seriously 'sling warped' from using the sling as much and as forcefully as I did), but if your practical course is anything like the Appleseed shoots you may wish to think about using another rifle.......  jmtcw.

I have shot mod 94's until they were to hot to load let them cool and shoot some more . They don't have the lock work of the BLR's strength to open the action and i never had one even come close to being hard to open . As far as accy. a hot bbl on a bolt gun can get funny also.
The reality is a lever action in most cases points faster and a bolt gun can handle more powerful rounds . The BLR brings them togather to a point . If a BLR can't go 600 rounds then it ain't much gun and we know that ain't so .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Why are yuo learning to shoot righty? This intrigues me as I shoot lefty but am right eyed dominant. I've already learned to shoot my pistols RH but the rifle still feels awkward to me, and a little painful.

I believe you posted this same post several months ago.  Still deciding?

Well, I broke down and bought a new RH Winchester M70 Featherweight in .308 to use for the course. The instructor strongly recommended that make. I went to the shops to see what they "felt" like and really liked the M70 as well as the Tikka T3 and Sako A7. They were quick and fit me well. I went with the Winchester because of the instructors experience with them and the type of action. Also, the others had plastic detachable magazines that i wasn't crazy about. Probably not a big deal as they were very nice rifles and I may look at one again down the road.

Yes, holding a rifle RH after so many years of shooting lefty was awkward but not as bad as I thought.  Looking through the package rifles at the shop that had scopes...I could clearly see a difference using my dominant eye looking through the scope and I was able to keep both eyes open, another benefit...for me. I can see that this will take practice, more than just a course. But I think it'll be worthwhile.

Thanks!!
