Handis Multiplying Faster Than Scopes
« on: May 04, 2010, 03:48:52 PM »
My collection of Handis had outpaced my supply of scopes and more Handis are on my "as soon as I have the cash" list. I put a 3X Leupold on my .500 S&W, a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9X40 on my .233, a Simmons Prohunter 2-7X32 on my Trapper .357 Max. I'm still hoping to use open sights with my .45 Colt BC. That left me with a Nikon 4X40 that I'm hoping to save for my next Handi, the Talo Trapper 45/70. That still leaves my .22 mag. without a scope. I ended up ordering two 3-9X32 Simmons Prosport scopes. At about $25 each from Natchez they were within my budget and have a very clear picture. Don't know that I'd trust them to perform on a heavy hitter, but should be just the ticket for the .22 mag. and I'll have one left over for whatever else comes down the pike.
BTW I really love the 2-7X32 Simmons Pro-hunter that I put on the .357 Max.

The Simmons Pro-Hunters have some pretty good optics for the price.  I've had 5-6 of em for a couple of years and have no problems with any of them except I lost a cap to the wind sighting one of the rifles in.  Got em on 280's, 257 Roberts and a 243.  I got them when Natchez had em for about $80.00 each for the 3-9X40.  I've seen em cheaper there since I got em.  DP

I had one of the Philippine made 2-7x32 Simmons Prohunters, it worked fine, a nice little scope. I sold it to Midwayraider in my recent scope clearance sale, when he received it, the reticle had turned in the tube, apparently just from (mis)handling in the mail!  ::)  He contacted Bushnell and sent it in to them with $10, they sent him a NIB Simmons 3-9x40 Prohunter!! ;) So, while maybe they aren't the most reliable scopes made, at least Bushnell stands behind them.

For a long time, I was putting rifles together and scrounging around for scopes.  Now, for the first time, I've got a 7mm-08 barrel, scope sighted, sitting and waiting for a frame and stock.  Over the years, I think Bushnell Banners have given me the most bang for the buck.  I've got six or seven of them......one thanks to Tim....again, and Thanks again Tim, one more time.

I have a Simmons 3-9x50 on my Handi .45-70, and the recoil hasn't bothered it a bit.  I've made, over the years, some marvelous shots with both the Simmons and the Banners, with everything from .22 to .45.  With eyes as bad as mine are becoming, I could mount a mason jar on the barrel, mark an X on the bottom and do as well as with a Leopold :'(

I dunno, more than likely automated handling, they don't handle much by hand any more, machines and conveyors, although someone may have dropped it too, but it should have survived that, (well made) scopes are supposed to be shock proof.  :-\

You're welcome Pete, enjoy it!  ;)

Big Blue    I think just the opposite.   I got two or three extra scopes, so you know what that means. Yea,  Gotta get two or three new Handies so I can mount the scopes on them. ;D

I agree with petemi... again?

I have several of the bushnell banners on my guns...

I save points up on a cabelas card and get them on sale at cabelas around $79.00

They are very clear and bright... and its easy to move the point of impact.

3 x 9 x 40....

great scope for the money...

I have a 3-9x40 Banner on a .308 Ruger M77 MKII.   The combination is superb.....fox, crow, deer and coyote all at more than 300 yards.  Don't tell Patty about the crow.  She's Indian and killing crows is bad medicine.

The two or three new Handis is a given! It's all the accessories that kill my wallet. For instance, I don't know how many times in the past I've tried to fool myself into believing I could still see good enough to shoot iron sights. Heck I'm trying it again now with the .45 Colt BC and a set of WRGS sights. I invest in a nice set of sights just to find out I'm still too blind to use them. So I end up scoping the rifle anyway. I guess no one can blame a guy for trying! ;)

Tim,
I've even had to send a Leupold back. It was a very old model that they no longer made. The ocular lens came loose and they fixed it up like new and paid to mail it back to me all within two weeks. Great scopes, but they sometimes break too.

I've gotta agree.  I'm playing with my .30-30 with the original H&R open sights........and, I can still hit the barn from the inside ;D  Thank God you have good vision, it's a terrible thing to loose.  Red dots have become my solution and I have several.  They're not a perfect answer by any means, I can't shoot MOA with them.  I'm doing better with scopes and iron sights shooting left handed with my better left eye or shooting right handed with both eyes open as I always did.  The problem is that when shooting right handed, the good left eye wants to take over, and it takes a few seconds to get things focused.

Having a dominant left eye and being a right handed shooter is the main reason I could never use a scout scope. Twenty years ago I had fantastic vision, but age and diabetes stole it away. I sure do miss it!

What about some good quick detatchable rings and steel bases?
