Over priced BH 209
« on: May 04, 2010, 04:42:37 PM »
I was in a Bass Pro this afternoon in Oklahoma and checked the price on BH 209. They had it on priced at $44.99 for 10 oz what the heck is that about.  They are crazy all I can say.

Not only is BH out of site, but if you'll notice, some of those premium sabots are $2.00 a pop!  I guess that's ok if you can do a one shot site in, and drop a deer with each shot after....... ???

Your right, Ive said it before and I will say it again - The BP inline world is ripping you off ! It's all hype BS that keeps the prices going up and up until everyone stops buying the hype adds and TV show BS the prices will keep going up....

I am glad I have a couple 15 - 20 yeasrs worth or bullets and sabots for my Encore so I won't have to purchase supplies for a while.

Also - Goex (real black powder) works just as good in the inlines and is really inexpensive to buy and you can even buy in bulk form Powder INC and get it really cheap if you buy 5 lbs or more (10.50 per pound). I have bought 2 large bulk orders from them and am stocked very well to hunt and shoot all I want and not have to worry about running out. Oh and guess what....No crud rings....:)

$40 plus for 10 oz's - who ever spends that much for powder is just foolish, but i guess if you have it and don't care what stuff costs then go for it.

One time I bought a jug of BM3 for about 27 - 29 bucks or so and yes it shot good but not that good, I thought to my self what a dumb ass I am and vowed to not fall for the hype again, yes it helped me get a couple more shots before I had to swab the barrel vs the 777 I used before or the pyrodex RS, I still have a half jug of that BM3 and probably won't use it since I primarily use just Goex now and get just as many shots before needing to swab the barrel.

Sorry guys for the rant but when ever I see these prices it just pisses me off a bit, its like $5 - $7 primers...what in the world is going on? Are the large banks selling this stuff now?  :)

It won't be long and they will cost as much as 50 cal BMG ammo ($5.00 a round), Everybody stop paying for this stuff and go back to basics.

2 bucks for a bullet and a plastic sabot -  W   T   F   are they thinking ?

if folks would come back to earth  and  start using real black and cast their own bullets the price would come back down too. the inlines will shoot pure lead cast bore diameter bullets  just fine.two bears is right on with all the hype tv hunting and the such.

I just about never go to Bass Pro. There are ways to economize & still use the good stuff at times. I use home cast bullets for any general shooting & test the zero &  higher end sabots for hunting. You can do the same with B209. I like to be able to set the gun aside a day or two on the hunt after shooting, without cleaning or worry. Of course I never bought any B209 from BP in the 1st place. I've shot deer with home cast 44cal handgun bullets & full bore cast conicals. If the bullets goes in the right spot most anything will do.

That is an insane amount to pay for BH 209.  Although I probably would pay it if I had too.  By far the best powder I've shot in a BP.

I poured four jugs on my garden.  It makes good fertilizer.  I bought some 2-3 yrs. ago, and tried it out in the summer months.  Shot fine.  Later that year I could not get the stuff to ignite with the same components used the summer months.  As a matter of fact, I tried pouring some out and lighting it with a match.  A few grains sparkled.  This was from previously sealed jugs.

Obviously it got contaminated somehow?  It was stored with all my reloading powders, as well as my Pyrodex, etc. which are all fine.  I won't buy again.

Ive gone through 7 cans of it during the winter/summer months and even in snow/rain, Best powder you can buy for an inline muzzleloader!  Use hot CCI 209M primers and its flawless. Remington STS primers seem to perform good as well.

mechanic,

You never did answer my question that I asked a few months back, so I'll ask again. What was the lot# on those jugs of Blackhorn 209? What rifle/ignition type/primer were you shooting it with? Were you swabbing with something wet between shots?

I have shot a few cases of it since April 2008, and never had a problem with several different lot numbers. Blackhorn 209 has only been available to purchase since April 2008, and I have saved a couple containers of the first lot. One was opened in April 2009 and fired just like new. I will also be conducting further testing of that powder this month which will be slightly over 2 years to check for reliability as well as degradation over a chronograph.

BH209 is not made to burn in the open, it is made to burn in a confined space under pressure.

BS makes good fertilizer too, it is much cheaper, and seems to be plentiful.

kctibs,

Powder Valley (Winfield, Kansas) has it for $24, all day, every day. Click on the link, then click "Powders", then click "Accurate Arms". BH209 is on the top line.

Funny you should metion that while I was in Tulsa this week I had plans to go to Powder Valley and customer pick up some powder and primers. BH 209 one of which was on my list. But was unable to make it by there on my way home.

Busta,

I have to be honest, the WAY you responded to my post indicates you either think I'm an idiot or a liar.  I got a little angry at first, so I waited to respond.

I only saved one container from the BH.  The sticker on the bottom is marked 8-13-08.  I used Winchester standard primers, #W209, as well as some older CCI.  I did not swab the bore, as there was nothing to swab, the powder did not fire.  I tried three combos of sabot and some conicals.  I also tried the BH in some 45-70 cases with Rem mag. primers.  These also failed to fire, but the primer did push the uncrimped bullet into the bore.

Since the powder fired fine when I first purchased it, until I figure out what happened, I will not buy more.  I am not suggesting others follow me in that.  Most of the reviews I have read are positive.

If it works for you, fine.

This is all moot, as I literally have poured the powder out.  I saved one container that I store some cast bullets in.

By the way, since this powder won't ignite or burn with a match, you might want to contact the folks and tell them they can remove that "Extremely Flammable" label.

Thanks,

Ben

mechanic,

Thanks for the reply. That is one lot date that I never had, there should also be a lone number above the date on that sticker. It should be something around a 5, 6, or 7.

Still curious as to which muzzleloader and breech plug you were using? I have never had it fail to fire even though I tried. I have fired it in rifles it wasn't even designed to shoot in, as that is just my nature to find out why it won't work with lesser ignitions. These include not recommended 209 ignitions, .25 ACP ignition with both standard and magnum small rifle primers, as well as #11 ignition rifles and shotguns just to test what the minimum should be. The #11 ignition had some hang-fires, but never failed to ignite. The .25 ACP ignition was much better with the standard SRP, but still not what I would call perfect ignition, it was not what I would call hang-fires though, it did seem like it was just a millisecond after the hammer fell. The .25 ACP with the magnum SRP was excellent with saboted bullets in mild weather, but not so much with full bore conicals in cooler 40 degree weather. In the not recommended 209 breech plugs it was not so much a problem with ignition, but rather with the 209 primers seperating after the shot. The H&R/NEF standard 209 ignition with the orange primer carriers were about as bad as it could get, as they leaked heat and pressure like crazy. I found them not reliable, even if you used a brand new carrier for each shot.

I have tested it from one extreme to the other, as much as 50 shots through the same breech plug without ever having to swab the bore or pick the plug. I have shot everything from 155 grain saboted bullets in my .45's to 480 grain full bore conicals in my .50's. Did you contact Western about your results? I am very sure they would have liked to hear that feedback. I do know that whatever works in the mild summer months, may not give you the same results in the cold winter months when it gets down in the sub zero temps. That is why for hunting, I only use the Federal 209A or CCI 209M primers, as they are the hottest 209 primers. For paper punching, I have used several (11) different 209 primers without a problem. Even all the way down to the 209-4 (410) primers and not recommended reduced muzzleloading primers.

The powder does need a good sealed 209 type ignition in the muzzleloader, as it needs both heat and pressure for best ignition results. With the recommended type of 209 ignition, and several custom/costumized 209 breech plugs, I have never had a problem.

I am most curious to know the muzzleloader (model, make), breech plug type, and bullets you were using? your results

Thanks again!
