Anyone with a model 25 in .204??
« on: May 05, 2010, 01:44:44 PM »
Any guys out there with the model 25 in .204? How are you liking it accuracy wise? Is the plastic magazine holding up? Any issues?

I MIGHT be able to afford one in a month. Im debating between a savage 12fv and 25. Leaning heavily toward the 25. I really like the removable box magazine of the 25 and it is one of the VERY few guns I have seen in person that I liked with a wood stock.

Accuracy with 40 gr. Hornady factory loads was 3/8" at 100 yards.  With a 10-20 mph crosswind.  200 yards was about 1 1/2".

Only problem was the bolt lift.  It cocks on opening, and is very hard to open.  Supposed to get better starting at 100 round, don't have that many in mine.

Sounds good! I really like the 25. I was concerned about its 'medium' bull barrel heating up faster than the 12fv. I havent seen the FV but from what I gather it has a more heavy barrel.

I have a model 12. It is heavy but it is one of the most accurate rifles i have ever owned. It doesn't seem to heat up that fast. I have never seen a model 25 so i can't comment on that one.

I just picked one up a week ago,and after about 50 rounds through er,,( a bit of barrel break in),,today it shot 32gr v-max factory ammo 5 rounds at .3moa,,and the 40gr v-max does the same,,it's definitely a keeper,,

NICE! I cant wait to get one. The stock is so pretty on these Im worried I will be afraid to take it into the field. It will spend most of its life on a bench though

Want to ask Clay and Dozer if they did any type of barrel break in process like shoot one shot and clean, or what they did do. I have a 25 in 223 that I havent shot yet.

I know the barrel break in your thinking about, like where you shoot one clean, shoot clean, shoot 5 then clean ,repeat.etc..
It wasn't mentioned in the savage manual,so I didn't bother,,I did clean it as soon as I got it out of the box,,and MAN !!,,I'm glad I did,,,I couldn't believe how much crud come out,,it probably took me near an hour to clean a new out of the box rifle, went to the range, shot about twenty round's,,40g shot good right at the start,32 were not so good.1-1.5 moa, brought er home and cleaned repeated the same the next day.about twenty rounds brought er home and cleaned er...measured concentricity on factory hornady 40g and 32g,,the next weekend, shot my worst runouts of 32g to foul the barrell, about 10 rounds,,then at about a total of 49 rds down the barrel,,the 32 started shooting like a laser beam...actually I'm going out cruising tonight with it,,wind's are calm and I'm looking for a predator or varmint to see what it can actually do

and this is what some 40gr V-max load development is like with my savage mdl 25 204 ruger,,,haven't chrony'ed them yet ,possibbly this weekend,,not quite as good as the 32gr,,but good enough to hunt with,,and I suspect they are goung faster then my 32gr load of 3677fps,,I suspect the 40 gr V-max are pushing 3700fps at least

I have a thumb hole stocked Mod 25 in 223 with a medium heavy BBL, I could have gone with the 204 but I did not want to start reloading another cal. My only complaint is the plastic trigger guard & mag for a gun that cost over $700.00 retail, granted I did not pay that much but I like milled steel and plastic just don't cut it. 62gr commercial ammo will cut clover leaves all day long at 100 yds.

those are some awesome groups.  I have also been looking at buying one of these in .204 or.223.  I am leaning towared the classic sporter barrel model.  Are any of you guys using the classic, or are all these from the heavier barreled version.
