Loading Trail Boss
« on: May 06, 2010, 09:42:09 AM »
Last night I loaded up a box of .38 Special for the wife, using 3gr of Trail Boss.  I use an RCBS electronic powder measure and scale, it sure took forever for the thing to measure out 3 grains.  Trickle mode all the way.  Finally got frustrated and used an old Lee scoop measure to speed thing up by dropping some powder in as it dropped powder.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I found it very frustrating period. It's like little doughnuts flying around, so light and fluffy. I used it in my RCBS Uniflow powder measure, and when I emptied the hopper, a bunch stayed in until I put a new powder in and had to waste two throws of the handle to insure all the little white doughnuts were expelled.
When this can is gone, IT will be gone. Not worth the frustration, to me.

I used a Lee powder measure and didn't have any trouble, but the dipper would work well with this powder because of it's light density.

I load TB using my old Lyman 55 measure, the Redding and also Dillon progressive. Maybe a bit of patience is needed here. I set my measures by throwing three charges and weighing the total of all three. I like TB and use it in .38 spl, .41 mag, .44 spl, .44 mag, .45AR and .45 Colt. It measures and performs just fine IME.

I'm having the greatest success using this powder in 30-06 and the only problem I've experienced is this powder WILL NOT pour through funnels and such that are 22-45 cal universal. But when fitted with the proper 30 cal drop tube my uniflow meters 16g + of the stuff like it was WW296

I like this powder a lot! 16.0g behind a 150g jacketed bullets shoots inside 1.5" at 100 yds through my ruger M77 at only 1600fps or so

A recent Handloader or Rifle Magazine had an article about loading reduced loads in rifles using Trail Boss.  Sounded neat to me but these measuring concerns have my attention. No mention of measuring problems in the article as I recall.

Trail Boss meters very consistently in my Redding 10X measure.
I like it in .38 special and .45 Colt for revolvers and Handi rifles. Standard deviation figures aren't real tight, but the accuracy is excellent.

Fun and trigger time on the cheap mostly

Originally they were worked up as a low pressure load to shoot from a National Ord m1903a3 but they've shot so good from my Ruger M77 I'll continue to load em. Especially after I order come cast bullets from MBC then they may proove to be an effective extremely reduced recoil deer load.

I love TB , I buy about 4 times as much of it as I do other pistol powders , the only problem I have with it is that when setting up my RCBS / Pact thrower , I have to change out pans to calabrate the scale , 250g woln't fit in the one that comes with the scale .  :D ;D :D ;D

The Lee plastic scoops do a GREAT job with this powder too , its almost idiot proof .

I enjoy loading my 45-70 with TB. I use a RCBS Uniflow and have no problems at all. I do have to use a small long-handled painting brush to get it all out, but it's not that bad.

Have you wiped down the inside of your measure with an anti static dryer sheet?

I've been using it in my .460 with reduced loads with good results. Kinda like shootin' cowboy .45colt loads outta it.

I gave up weighing it anymore for the .460. I marked on a case the depth the bullet would sit when seated. Put the case on my trimmer and cut it a eight of a inch shorter than my mark and made some wire handles for it. Works great.

I wiped it down when I got it, also do that for my electronic measure, cuts down on static alot.

Thanks, Dinny
