Turned Down a Job

I was offered a high paying job working on the oil spill clean-up.  They wanted folks with 40 hour Hazwoper Training.  2 months of 80 hour weeks.

The oil spill clean up will end shortly 6 to 9 months.
If it is 3X the money you would see in that same time span I would go.  If not...

I've never been unemployed for more than a day or two in my life, but I have now since Oct. 3, and can't get a job. Our area is depressed and pickins are slim for a 60 year old.

I didn't remember what 'hazwoper' stood for, so I looked it up. Found a couple sites (of many) with questions answered and some training sites, including online training - in the faq section is a question about online training being "good enough" for acceptable certification. FYI

Two schools of thought. If you have a job with reasonable stability, you may want to keep it. If there is a chance of the job going South, you may want to venture forth and give it a shot. If you don't have a job, all you've got to lose is the training cost (around $300 for 40hr certificate) Trouble with all this is most of the times I've been laid off, I though my future was reasonably stable - go figure. It's a crap shoot, either way.

I'm like Dee, over 60 and out of work since last December - gives us a different take on a lot of what is going on with this world.

If I had a job at the present, and I were your age TN, I would go also, but Swampy is not far behind me in age, and it makes a difference in the job market.

I have all the training and tons of related training.  I also have a good, fairly stable, easy, modest paying job with benifits which I'm thankful for.

Dee, I'm a lifer now ... 3rd time back in and I figure no point in leaving again. Were I unemployed though, I might be hitching a ride to the gulf. Had fellas working for me in Somalia whose families were in Ethiopia and they sent $ home, didn't see them but once a year. Gotta do what you can.

Before you jump on that oil clean up job, you may want to talk to some of the hundreds of men suffering from respiratory problems after they worked on the Exxon Valdez spill in Prince William Sound.  They have received little or no compensation for their problems.

Gosh, it seems like most of the work was done in 6 months, but there was a smaller crew still working two years later on small projects and spot cleanups.  After the first six months VECO (the oil service contractor handling the clean-up) kept things real quite.

Yeah good points Sourdough. That's the way I remember it. It was easy to get jobs for a while with Exxon but it was a mess and there have been lingering health problems.

As for Hazwop training, check with your local Vo Tech schools and community colleges. Here in Alaska our local university outlet often have such classes. I'd guess they may be firing up some classes in the gulf area. But much of the work may be done by the time training is done, if this steel catch funnel thing works.

I'd say it's very likely their health problems weren't caused by the work they did on the clean-up.  I've been doing it for 15 years.

Alaskans seem to believe the Valdez cleanup was a PR scam. To save the wildlife, they would steam clean the surface of the rocks (killing everything) while ignoring the oil underneath. The area looks pristine IMHO.

 they probably grab you fast as an armed gurd or something at some gated community..
 we got that type communities all over ,here in n.c.
 they probably hire you as a supervisor..pays not much but better than nothing.. good luck ,an god bless. slim

I am willing to bet these folks didn’t wear or wear correctly the protective gear they are given to use for the cleanup.  In my work we are exposed to Hexavalent Chromium and we are given the training and equipment like respirators and change the filter as required.  Maybe it was proven that the Exxon Valdez illnesses were self inflicted who knows.

Yooper I think you are right - very little training and I think the folks were breathing some pretty nasty fumes in some places. Might not all have been the oil but some of the other chemicals used in the clean up.

Yes the PWS LOOKS good now but many places you can dig down in the gravel and find a lot of oil. It will be there for a long time.

Looks are deceiving - the herring fishery has never come back. Lately its blamed on the increased number of whales eating up what herring have come back. But I had a friend doing some lab work on the herring and he said it looked to him that the oil exposure had a significant depressing effect on their ability to reproduce viable young- since they spawn close to the beaches where the oil continues to leach out into the water.

Some, with 20-20 hindsight now say they should have burned off a lot of that oil instead of using all the hot water and detergents etc.
