Update from the "Dismal Swamp" [FL]
« on: May 07, 2010, 01:04:28 AM »
The State hired trappers to kill and/or run off the pigs in my domain.  Apparently they have done a very good job of it too.  I am getting snakes again for the first time in decades and the deer are thick as ticks on a dog.

There is evidence, tolerated by the GW, that corn feeders (legal) are being used about 3/4 of a mile south along with evidence (illegal) that someone is hunting (probably turkeys) about 200 yards south of me.  I called the GW, he was going to meet me there, but didn't show.  That was two weeks ago.

Should I rattle his cage again?  I do understand "work related" interference and other cases that are higher priority taking precedence.  But he didn't coordinate later with me and has left me wondering if the issue is still open or he checked and it is OK.  He doesn't "owe me" anything, but a conversation would be nice.  I feel like the FWC's eyes and ears in the domain as I am there a LOT and they are there practically never.

Yep...give him another chance...he might have an oops! moment.  I forget a thing or two myself.

Be careful with your "illegal" hunters.  My experience with poachers is their illegal activities are not confined to wild game.

Warden work is 24/7, when most of us are sleeping at night they are out working poachers.  If they are spread as thin in Florida as in California they have twenty new calls a day.  A few years back we had a doper-poacher working an area we were hunting.  Knowing the F&G work load we provide detailed information on the person, vehicle, campsite, the community he lived in and firearm he was using.  The poacher had taken out five bucks without tagging one.  In fact he offered us one.

Interesting person to talk with and gained a lot of information.  He on a court ordered work program for drug offenders.  So the comment about them being involved with other activity is correct.  I knew of this person because of criminal investigations I had conducted before retirement.  He had spent time in the county jail and did not learn anything about good citizenship.

Give him another call. Maybe he just got tied up with something else and forgot.
