William we could compare notes on snake killing after Carla.  When she hit I was a Game Warden assigned to Matagora Island, I wore out a Winchester single barrel 16 gage shotgun killing snakes.  I picked up five boxes of shells every morning as I left the office, as a supervisor on the clean-up crew I carried the gun, it seemed every piece of trash we moved had snakes under it,  I'm sure glad someone else had to buy the ammo I shot.

Yes, following Carla there were plent of rattlers to be killed, I'm sure I can accout for my share. ??? ???

I like your approach. Kill them all
I probably have killed more snakes, without regard too race/gender/creed or lethalness, in one 3000 acres of palmetto flats in the Trinity River bottom--with a 6 foot brush hook-- than most everbody here has even seen, and have not lost a minutes sleep over the death of any of them.
Death to snakes--belly crawlers or two legged.

This is my shorthair/Brittany after being bitten on the snoot by a small rattler. Now he carries a .44 Bulldog.

Heh, when I was a kid our dachsund would get bit by copperheads fairly regular, almost always on the lip.  She'd mope around with her snoot all swole up for a few days but it never seemed to bother her much.  If anything it made her want to kill them all the more.

Haven't had a copperhead, or any other kind of snake since I brought ole Huff the Jack Russell home, 7 or 8 years ago. Of course I haven't had any stray cats around either. Or neighbors cats. ;D

my snake gun is a single action 22 lr  with what they call rat shot. i've shot several snakes with it and they just die right there.not even a squirm from them. i've taken several copperheads with it ,and my other helper is my dog 'casey'.she gets them coiled up by barking at them and then she circles them to keep them in that position until i make it over there with my single six 22lr.
i wish i was just half the man, that my dog thinks i am

Rat shot ain't half bad, if you use it in a gun you don't worry about bore wise, or if you clean often. Other wise, you will eventually have a smooth bore for all intents and purposes. It will collect in the grooves. I have shot a many a round of that stuff as a kid, and it will kill snake in close.

I was watching a show on tv and the guy claimed that snakes hate garlic. That by making a spray and spraying around your property it will repell them. Would be interesting to see if it works. I killed a rattler a while back coiled up right next to my dog's food dish at the corner of my house. A very unpleasant surprise for my wife when she went to feed the dog!

Hummm, that may just work...  :-\
I been doin that for years to keep vampires away.  Works real good, haven't ever seen one on my property...  Now that I come to think on it, I haven't seen a rattler either.  So I guess it works on them too!   ;D

I saw that you did!  I cannot believe you came through Atlanta and didn't let me know!   :o  If you went north on 75 up to the Blue Ridge you were only a few miles from my house...  :-\

I would have liked to meet the hen ...  ;D

+1 one on the old T/C 45-410 with screw in choke. I lost a good bird dog to a water moc two yrs ago. Got the T/C last yr and use 2 1/2" #6 in it. The mocs hate to see it coming. The moc population has gone down since I got it. The war ain't over yet!

I've had great results with .22 HP.

I used the .38/.357 CCI stuff one time. Shot the snake twice from about 6' away, and he took off pretty mad. He may have died later, but the last I saw of him he was moving off pretty fast.

Shot a cottonmouth once with a .357 mag. Well, . . . almost. I was aiming for the head, but missed. However, the concussion from that bullet hitting the water right by his head knocked him out. A friend went over and grabbed it (thinking it was dead) and threw it to me. It was then upon inspection that we discovered there wasn't a scratch on him. Stuck him in a bucket and he came to a little later. Wasn't a happy camper. He later became a moving .22 target.

I have shot alot of snakes with 38 shot capsules some store bought some hand loaded and never had a snake crawl off . You shoot them in the head ? I do like to keep the distance short 6-8 feet . Most of the snakes i shoot are in the 3 foot range , longest 42 inch copperhead . Is it the larger snakes that are imune to the 38 shot load ? just asking
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

If I'm going to kill snakes around my place I use a shotgun.  If I out hiking, hunting or fishing I carry a 22LR with rat shot.  Most of time, if I see one, either he or I go another way.  Have only had to shoot 2 - That 22 worked with one shot both times.
