I never think about snakes. When I see one I ignore it, if it is over 6 feet away and moving away from me. Otherwise, it gets shot by my S&W 637 with CCI 38 snake shot.

My wife saw one in the water a few weeks ago. I went into the house to get a 22. As I was leaving, I heard her shoot. She used a 380 and blew its head nearly off. It was 3' long and as thick as her wrist. Guess the rule is have a gun, most any gun.

I figure that any snake even non-poisonous is hazardous. I don't want to put up with a healing non-poisonous but infected bite.

Both where I grew up, and where I live now, Copperheads, Moccasins and Rattlesnakes run amuck. I leave Black and Kingsnakes alone but any poisenoss snake I kill. Simple reason it's one less I, my wife, and my grandkids have to watch out for. If in the woods, away from home I'll just give them a wide berth. Once, while crossing a shallow creek, I felt like I got punched in the leg. Looked down to see a Moccasin. I can take you right back to the exact spot where that snake died. There's a pile of rocks 2 foot high where I hit him with everything I could get my hands on!

I would never promote anyone taking chances with serpents but, no eco system has ever benifited from the loss of one of the animals in it? So, if they are not bothering you leave them alone, if they scare you get some education on them, if you feel threatened by them by all means use what you have to protect yourself and others around at the time?

I have used this method of loading snake shot for many years, not only is it very effective on snakes it is also effective on small game and varmints. I usually load fifty at a time, I don’t shoot a lot of them so they last for a long while.

Well S.B., no family has ever benefited for one of them being snake bit either. I'm like most here. Bull, grass, water, or rat snake. He's safe here (unless Huff the Jack Russel finds him), but a venomous snake on my place is a HAZZARD, capital H. They serve no purpose but, puttin everyone at risk when moving around out buildings and equipment. The few mice, or rats they might eat on my place is eclipsed by the danger, of SERIOUS INJURY, or maiming, disfiguring, or even death, that can be caused by a venomous snake bite.
You want'em on your place fine, but with kids playin, and folks working around'em it ain't smart. It's kinda like sayin that no ecosystem ever benefited by "not having" too many wolves. Tell that to Alaska, and other northern states right now.JMO

Fire ants, egrets, and them big dove are imports too. They got here by sneakin across the border too. Other than it being legal to poison fire ants.

rattle snakes are protected in indiana. if you shoot one just dont tell

Dang, you guys done got me confused...I just use my Ruger Mark-II and hollow points...
I don't like to let them get close enough for the .357 Blackhawk and snake shot...

Done alot of eastern NC blackwater bream fishing in a cypress strip one man boat. Usually carry a .22mag six inch revolver with CCI cupped rat shot. Here the rattler is protected by law,but that doesn't save him all the time. The cottonmouths are what concern me the most,they are ill tempered with a particularly nasty bite. Within about 12 feet the rimfire is good medicine. Here's a tip on ID; the moccasin swims with about the first third of his body out of the water,just above the surface. We used to enjoy eating the rattlers and collecting their noisemakers.I still have one with 13 rattles and a button. I have carried a short barrel pump shotgun tethered to a milk jug for emergency flotation. It really changes any "no shoulders" attitude.

I grew up in Diamondback country, they get big and are ill-tempered. We had bull snakes that are docile and beneficial but, a Rattler, that's a whole 'nother story! As a teen, I had a single shot .410 shotgun that would reach 20 yards or so. Just blew their heads off. Nowdays, that old shotgun is still at work for my relatives. I carry a TC Contender with 10" barrel in 45/410. I don't reload for it, just some dove&pheasant Winchesters around. It makes a better 410 shot with one hand than a 45 anyway. It's good to 25 feet and that's all I need. The shooting range has rattlers too so, I carry it with me in a Hunter holster for that model contender. To me, it's just a tool.

The CCI 45acp cycle about half the time in my Kimber, if I remember right. Can't remember the last time I used them and never shot anything with them. I use my M-60 3'' with homemade CCI shot capsule loads,38spl. I had to use #8s instead of #9s like the book says cause I couldn't get 9s at the time. They work good on snakes, pigeons and other little critters. More than once I have cleaned out the pigeon infestation of the barn with these loads. Pretty fun wingshooting pigeons with a M-60. Pretty good eating too. I sneak in at night and once inside I ready myself and flip on the lights. I pick out the one I want to shoot first while he is perched and go for the flying ones after the first shot. My best is a triple so far. I'm not too good at guessing distance but I think around 30ft is the longest shot, not sure. These loads are by the book accept for shot size and will dimple the sheet metal on the barn pretty good at that range.
I used to carry a .22 revolver when prairie dog shootin with the first few rounds to battery being CCI shot caps. I used to lay on the dog mounds sometimes to shoot prone, over or next to the hole. When I found out rattlesnakes shade themselves just inside the holes when it's hot, I stopped that practice. I found one once just inside a PD hole and shot it with the .22 at close range. It took more than one shot to kill a small rattler. Never used them much after that.
Guess this post ain't too informative, but maybe good for a laugh. Can't believe I used to stretch out over PD holes to shoot prone off the mound. What a moron!!

Did you know that an attempt was made in Texas in the late 1800s to introduce the Mongoose to rid the country of rattlers? As it turns out the rattler's strike is much faster than the cobra and other snakes of the mongoose's home land, and the mongoose had no immunity the rattler's venom. The little guy did not last long down here.

Larry Gibson, please explain this to me, are you neck turning this or just reducing them with a smaller sizing die?
"I then turn the front part down to .444" diameter leaving the "case mouth" at the correct headspace measurement of .898".
Are you using trial and error for leaving OAL at the .898" dimension?

While fishing in the swamps, ponds and rivers of East NC I always carried a shotgun of some sort in the boat for snakes, both the slithering kind and the kind that walked on two legs. There are some cotton mouths so big over there that they could kill you just by biting you leg or arm off. They did not need to poison you.
I knew a guy that was a town cop in one of the little towns around there. He was terrified of any snake. He was fishing in one of the rivers and this huge cotton mouth dropped out of a tree into the front of his boat. His natural reaction was to draw his S&W mod. 66 357 mag with bullets not snake shot and start shooting. He emptied the pistol and did kill the snake then noticed water started running into his boat big time. He started it up and got it up on plane and ran it to the boat ramp before it sank. He had a hard time living that one down for a loooooog time. He was called the great white boat killer.

I probably have killed more snakes, without regard too race/gender/creed or lethalness, in one 3000 acres of palmetto flats in the Trinity River bottom--with a 6 foot brush hook-- than most everbody here has even seen, and have not lost a minutes sleep over the death of any of them.
Death to snakes--belly crawlers or two legged.

9 shot H&R .22LR with CCI shot cartridges has served me well.
It has removed some pretty large cottonmouths.

My grandmother had one of those H&Rs when I was a kid. I used to that that thing down the creeks and shoot snakes. Didn't have snake shot back then though. We would also drive catfish, and bass up into the shallows, and shoot them too. Pistol fishin.

After Carla in 1961--I spent a month in that palmetto flat. That was after water went down.
Cutting property line with a brush hook. On a slow day I would kill 25.

I wasn't the only one.
Our four man party was keeping count for a few days--we lost interest because it was just a turkey shoot.
Cut about a hundred yards of property line and kill 15 snakes then the surveyor would bring the instrument up and kill a few more as he moved up--the rear chain guy would kill a few more.
Those snakes had moved off the river due too flooding and were headed back home.
It was/became more of a chore than anything.
But, you are correct--it was an event.
