Owners of Oyster Creek nuclear plant may not release leak information

LACEY TOWNSHIP -- The Oyster Creek nuclear power plant in New Jersey thinks it knows what caused a leak of radioactive tritium -- but it won't share the information with the public.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said a report addresses groundwater contaminated with tritium, some of which may be entering a cooling canal flowing into Barnegat Bay in undetectable levels.

Full coverage of The Oyster Creek Nuclear Plant

Plant spokesman David Benson said the report, which was given to the NRC, is an internal company document meant only for engineers.

But the NRC may include it in an inspection report it plans to release in about six weeks.

The nation's oldest commercial nuclear power plant got a new 20-year license in April. It will be 60 years old at the end of the new license.

TRITIUM HUH? Maybe we ban make a bunch of gun sights with it. Or maybe even watch dials.

I think we have another booger man story here on the internet.  ::)

Entering the creek at undetectable levels?????? We may have hogs flying through Manhatten at undetectable levels as well. Why on earth would you utter something as asinine as that? I have 19 vials of radioactive tritium on my body as I print this.  Unless I'm missing something here this is a bit of hyperbole wraped around a wish it were a story bit of reporting. Sounds as though they did talk about it, stating it was for the engineers and MYOB to the politition. Having read the news piece I don't blame them.

TM this tritium is to hazardous nuclear watse like your afore mentioned "4000 watt death ray" was to military grade lazers. Tritium is tritium hot or cold up or down. There is no tritium that is worse than another. Once again whether you are trying to falsley mislead folks about a supposed "danger" or that you do not have the level of intelect to know that this is a silly false alarm.

Billy,

Without sitting down and educating myself I wouldn't know if this is a concern that warrants me being upset, scared, or just ignoring it.
I'm an educated mechanical engineer who now teaches future engineers for a living.
So it might be nice to refrain from the remarks about other members intellect.

Old Fart tritium is used in watch dials and gun sights everywhere.

Hey and sorry I wasn't and english major in college. I spend my time learning electrical theory.

TM it's kind of hard to put a number on a level the is "undetectacle" as stated. Once again you are worrying about the booger man under your bed. Guys like you spend your whole life worrying about some secret booger man, when the real dangers are out in plain sight and you miss them.

BTW did you get that kit for the 4000 watt "death ray" that runs on AA batteries puttogether yet, we are all waiting for a range report.

Billy,

Wasn't commenting on your english or level of education.
I apologize if you took it that way.

Between being busy and having fat fingers I make my fair share of mistakes myself.

I was just commenting on the statement on intellect that could have been taken as a personal attack.

An undetectable amount, that is how much has leaked, undetectable. I'm assuming that ain't very damn much if it can't be detected.

It's kind of funny that something like this is only covered by some far out news source. I am getting the feeling this is coming from a site similar to ones that report big foot sightings.

I think I'll have to go get me a tritium sight for my rifle. TM maybe you can get them to fit one to that 4000 watt "death ray" that runs on AA batteries. I am thinking the range report will be pretty neat.  :D ;D :D ;D

Regardless of all the hulabaloo: virtually EVERY method of power generation can have some level of spill or mishap requiring cleanup.

Yes, this is nuclear power, and that might be big and scary, but it's ultimately irrelevant.  They have a leak - seemingly a small one - that they need to clean up.  Let em clean it up.  Reality is if we hope to keep up with energy demand, you're going to have to get VERY comfortable with nuclear power very quickly.  IIRC, if we hope to keep pace with growing energy demands, the US is going to need on the order of a few hundred more nuclear plants to keep up.  Coal ain't gonna do it (and it pumps tons of crap into the air even when everything is going RIGHT), and wind, solar, hydro, and geothermal can go a long ways (and are all very clean power), but they can NOT meet our energy needs.
