Accuracy help
« on: May 08, 2010, 09:49:18 AM »
Howdy all... went to the range today to shoot my contender carbine in 30 herrett.  Super 14 with the cheasy extension properly welded of course.... I was getting about 4" groups at 100 yards using 27grains imr4198 and sierra 125gr gamekings. I know it's capable of way better than that.  I'm fairly new to reloading, so maybe i'm not doing something exactly correct. What are some things i should try to get my groups smaller?  Different powder charges? Different bullets?  Seating depth?  Any help woul;d be great I'm scratching my head.

The answer would be yes.

1.  Starting as the lower range of recommended powder charges increase the load at 0.5 grain increments until group sizes started opening up after initially getting smaller, until signs of excessive pressure occur or you approach maximum loads.

2.  If you don't get satisfactory accuracy doing #1, try different powder(s) and/or primers.

Sierra GameKings should shoot well with the right powder.  Seat them incrementally until the action just barely closes easily on a loaded round without leaving scuff marks from the lands on the bullet; that would be the proper seating depth.

Thanks for the reply.  I guess it's back to the drawing board from scratch.  I was being lazy and used a good load from my 10" 30 herrett pistol.  As far as seating goes I dont believe i can seat the 125grs long enough to touch the lands without them falling out.  I have a copy of a a book for the 30 herrett spefically and I'm using that O.A.L.  ???.  I just wish the range wasn't an hour away. :-\
