First bear stand pic of the year!

All,

Not exactly what I was hoping for and I had 38 more pictures of ravens. Anyone out there having any luck?

Did you make the brush pile for the stand or did intentionally place the bait drum there?  I don't know the first thing about baiting bears. Do you plan a firearm or archery hunt. Just want to learn about baiting. Don't know if its even allowed here in Bristol Bay.

Dand,

The experts at the bear baiting class said to make a big V out of trees and brush. If all goes right the bear should come in and give a nice quartering away shot. I made it from cutting a few trees, but mainly from already fallen trees in the area.

I orginally built this bear stand, so my son could hunt with me. Alaska is a tough place for youngsters to hunt big game and I thought bait stand hunting would be the easiest and safest. We get plenty pictures of bear, but have not shot one yet. This year we will try some of those ride in on 4 wheelers doubled-up and leave a hunter behind tricks. I think this will work.

thanks, I learned something about baiting. Yeah Alaska is tricky - lots of promise for hunts but you really have to work at it to make it happen in many places. Thanks for the hunt encouragement. Many many months for the anticipation to build.

Yeah Sourdough, I wonder about that sometimes when I fly between Anchorage and Dillingham in the winter. Especially the mountain areas closer to Cook Inlet. Those mts and valleys are plugged with snow and I wonder if anything besides ptarmigan and wolverines (if that) can live there. Seems like miles and miles of solid white. But I'm on commercial flights and way too high to see any tracks.

Dand:  I am speaking mainly of the Interior.  We have large expanses up here that are totally void of game.  Valley after Valley of prime Moose habitate.  Also areas of prime Caribou Habitat, but no animals.

A friend of mine killed a 6 footer just 6 miles north of me last Friday. He's just across the Tolovana river to the north.
