« on: May 09, 2010, 08:35:47 AM »
I would like to get the trigger pull down on the 243 cal. set-up it breaks clean at 4 1/2lbs
My other 2 Handi both break under 3lbs but as age creeps up I really don't have the time any more or don't want to open a cans of worms,I done a few trigger jobs like on my 1911 and other rifles SPR18 but he Handi seem they may give me a headache

Download Perklo's trigger hone info and read Raynor's trigger hone in the FAQs, it's not as bad as it looks, you can easily get it down to around 3lbs with a little time and effort.  ;)

Time was an issue for me also;
I took one to a local smith,,charged me an hour labor, going rate, $60 per hour.

He brought it from 4.5 too just under 3.25. I actually asked for less, but he was afraid I'd have trouble with the hammer staying in the cocked position. He told me about all he did was "polish" the bearing area's, I'm happy.

Ilion will do a trigger job on it, but Madison has stated what their parameters are, best advice is have it done when you have a barrel fitted if you don't care to do it yourself, but even that may not work since several members have had theirs returned untouched for whatever reason, it was too light or they just dropped the ball and never even checked to see if it met their requirement for a trigger job which is in the FAQs..... or find a local smith that will work on it as necchi did.  But if you can shim the latch shelf, you can do a trigger job IMHO.  ;)

Two tips that will make or break getting it back together easy....

1. Make the slave pin to hold the trigger parts together so it can be installed as a unit.

2. Cut a small triangular piece of ¼" plywood with a notch in one side to slip in front of the hammer to hold it back so you can install the trigger unit, then you don't need three hands to do it! ;D

The slave pin sure does make it alot easier.  I learned that the hard way. :D ;D  Now I will have to try the plywood tip. LoL

$60 is alot when you consider it can be done in less than 30 mins the second time.  ;)

Thanks, Dinny

You guys keep posting and next thing I know another one of my rifles is being modified.  Decisions, decision, 223 Rem trigger job or 45 120 reamer next?  Both at the same time?  Better ream the BC first, since I already started loading ammo for it. ;)

I've been asked to post pics of the hammer wedge, this is Fred M's idea and is in the Handi info on his website which can be accessed thru his web link on any of his posts and also in the FAQs under barrel fitting and I think accurizing.

Just a heads up on the Wolff springs, I just ordered a pack of 5 single coil direct from Wolff, their price is much better than Midway's, price was $26.54 shipped priority mail, shipping is $6.55.

My first trigger job on these was a pain in the butt, but I quickly found out not to charge in like a bull and take too many pins out :-[ ;D Every sense it's an easy task, just pay attention how you take it apart(and works) and be watchful on how much you take off the hammer, go REAL easy. And like Tim said a slave pin is a must and make sure you make a good tight fitting one, to avoid slop.
You can also do the manual job by lightly appling force to the rear of the cocked hammer with your thumb and put a cushion in front of the hammer (I use a tightly packed rag) and dry fire it. This has worked very well for me(and LOTS of others), just make sure to not put too much pressure on it. This would be my first choice if you don't want to break it down... you can do this in front of the TV, it's just tedious thats all.

I tried it and I think I went too far seem the trigger is back wre it started, the next step is to punch the pins out.
I wonder if it is the spring on the trigger guard needs a coil off of the sear and hammer have some ruff edges>

I'd start by just polishing the pins and pin bore in the trigger and take one coil of the trigger return spring, then check it after putting it back together. You might also try powdered graphite, it's been reported to reduce trigger weight without any work. Be careful using the method Aaron mentioned, several members have broken the sear notch off the hammer doing that, as he said don't put too much pressure on the hammer. Mic McPherson mentions 20lbs in his book, I asked him if he ever broke an hammer, said he hadn't, but he had only worked on older H&Rs, newer parts may be more brittle.

Tim: I tried the gun on a empty resized case and a new primer whent of no problem ,so nothing did break.
I wonder if you drop the trigger guard can you refit it easy and see how the weight goes as far as
just polishing the pins and pin bore need the hammer come out and take a coil off the spring?

Yes, just knock the two lower pins out and the trigger guard can be removed to work on those parts.

The larger pin right behind the small one?

Aaron,

Check through the FAQs it's in there. Take care and Feel it out, remember your trigger will settle in further so don't go too far with it. Go EASY!. Like Tim said the lip or sear notch of the hammer can break off if you put too much pressure on the hammer...
