A called pair of coyotes...which one do you shoot?
« on: May 09, 2010, 09:29:02 AM »
I'd like to hear from those that have called 2 or more coyotes, at one setting.

You're calling and a pair of coyotes are coming into the decoy. Their attention is focused on the decoy and both coyotes are within the range of the weapon that you're using.

Which one do you shoot? What's the reasoning for your choice?

Thank you, Bowhunter57

Take out the one behind.  The front one won't see him go down.  If all goes well, you'll have a good second shot.  It worked for me.    8)

Ditto, Sometimes that front one will run right to you while at other times, it may turn 90 degrees and hit the breeze. To take the front one first can result in the one behind it either retreating in high gear, or running around stiff jointed in an undecided fashion.

Yes, the second one first, the lead one will likely hear the one behind him get smacked and probably run a little toward you before taking off.  Larry

The one further away because one it gives you more time to shoot at the second one if it runs because it has further to run away and also sometimes if you KiYi it will stop to see who is hurt.

I shoot the one closest to cover, if there is cover, but most likely with my setups cover is a ways out for either. Then I shoot the closest one, and immediately start callin are barking as that will usually stop the second coyote for a shot. Gun shots, unless they have been shot at before and burned don't necessarily scare them off completely. This method has worked for me since about 1969, so coyotes ain't changed much.
