.45 Colt loads
« on: May 09, 2010, 10:08:59 AM »
Has anyone here shot any of the .45 colt factory loads in their Handy?I found something out yesterday about my particular rifle. It dosen't like  the Winchester Super  X 255 grain flat nose, but it likes Winchester super x 225 grain silvertips.I don't know if it is the lighter/jacketed bullet of the silvertips, or the fact they are loaded a little hotter.I has shot three boxes of the 255 grain flat nose superx through it and was having problems getting consistent groups. It was shooting pie plate groups at 50 yards so I figured it was the scope(old weaver k2.5).I purchased a new Burris timberline 4x, and installed it, but same problem.I had purchased several boxes of the silvertips also, so figured hey let's see what happens with a different ammo. The rifle shot lots more accurate,I'm fact the range marshal that was spotting for me could not believe it.No kidding it went from pie plate sized groups I'm to putting ten shots under 3 inches at 75 yards. So smaller groups at a farther distance.... ;D At least I know there is probably nothing wrong with my old weaver.

I've been shooting the Remington factory lead and Hornady LE stuff. Both give about two inch groups at sixty yards with open sights

I shot the Hornady LE ammo too and it was accurate to 75yds, opening a bit more than I liked at 100yds, maybe 3-4". I have noticed a few things about my .45LC Handi; it shoots better with slow heavy bullets in the beginning and after about 200rds it starts to shoot the lighter bullets good too. Mine has liked the 360gr CPB at 1100fps and now also likes the factory Cor-Bon 225gr Barnes XPBs at 1300fps.

Give it time, it will settle in there for you.

Thanks, Dinny

It's had about a hundred rounds through it already. I'm fairly satisfied with it now. It was shooting all over the place with the lead bullet super X, but when I changed over to the hollow point jacketed bullets it started shooting very well.It had been shooting poorly ever since I bought this ammo. I installed the scope (was working fine on another rifle) on the rifle right before trying out the ammo, so I thought the scope was bad.The range marshal agreed that the scope was probably bad.I installed the new scope, same problem.Try new ammo ,and the rifle automatically starts shooting better. Don't know about you guys but it just seems strange to me.

Only one way to know for sure.....reinstall the old scope and try it with the new jacketed ammo.  ;)

Any chance you didn't completely clean the barrel after you shot the lead bullets?  My thinking is that perhaps the bore could be a tid large and the jacketed bullets shoot better with a little lead in there first. ???  Don't overthink that thought too much, it was just a WAG on my part.

Thanks, Dinny
