shotgun stock help needed for a lefthand shooter
« on: May 09, 2010, 11:53:02 AM »
I hate being left handed in a right hand world, but I get by. My current problem is with my shotgun (a Browning Silver). I've read stocks are set up so a righty should shoot straight, but the angles involved cause a lefty to shoot to off to one side. While patterning my turkey choke tube, I learned my Silver shoots about 5 inches to the left at 25 yards. What's strange is that I kill lots of birds with this gun! Large patterns are great.
Oh well, I think a stock adjustment is needed. I see Win's SX3 comes with drop and cast adjustment shims. Would that solve my problem or do I need something more involved?
Now that I see how this is happening, I'm going to take my BPS and Wingmaster to the range to see if they do the same. This also might explain when I had a slug barrel for my Wingmaster, I had to adjust the rear sight way off to one side.
Thanks!

I doubt the slug gun problem was caused by a cast in the stock. After all the sights were being used and they are relatively unaffected by the stock. If you can see the sight it will likely work. Altering a stock affects the impact when the gun is fired instinctively.. which means the stock is really a part of the sighting system. Does the stock on your shotgun have cast on (a bend to the right as viewed from the rear)? Altering the angle of the butt stock will affect pattern im,pact but only if the patterning is done correctly..i.e. don't aim, just look at the aiming point, raise gun and fire. Done at 25 yards or so and fire 3-4 shots. This will give a good indication of the 'average' center if the pattern.. Note a very small change can make a large alteration in the placement of the patern..
