I'll look for the link, but basically it is a section of the US code that deals with imported arms. They can not contain more than a certain amount of "evil" assault weapon features (think recently expired assault weapon ban) unless they have a specifed list of "made in USA" parts in them. It can be pretty confusing, and there have been reports of local LEO's going overboard & arresting folks for what THEY believe are infractions. Even though you will likely be cleared in the long run, it's better to avoid the grief & stay well on the legal side.

Note the stock 10 round mag, way better than misfeeding sloppy fitting duckbill after market mags.
Ive tired them all, over $300 worth, and you can see what I went back to.

I forgot to mention, one option is to get a second insert (that fits inside the base) that contains an iron sight, as well as getting one for a scope. That way you can switch back & forth between scoe & irons ( or scope & red dot) pretty quickly. Pretty flexible.

Has anyone changed out the original front sight? I found some replacement, brightly colored, plastic sight pins at Tapco. They are not fiber optic unfortunately, but should be a big improvement over the original steel front pin. Otherwise, I might be putting a compact scope on the original wood stock. Shot it today, what a blast! Then a good cleaning. New spring loaded firing pin is the next modification. I am leaving it as original as can be other than upgrading the sights..

I tried them, but quickly decided they were of limited value. Unless they have bright light shining directly on them, they don't appear any more visible than steel. With the design of the front sight, that doesn't happen very often.

Well, thats what I was thinking. I wish there were fiberoptic front sights for this popular rifle. I will likely strain my eyes, or just go with a low profile, short optic of some sort on top of the dust cover..

I have had just about every duckbill mag manufactured for the sks and have gotten everyone to function properly with a little work. The biggest problem i find is the inside width of the mag isn't consistant from the bottom to the top this is why they stop feeding ammo. I remove the pusher and sand the sides of it till its free to move the whole distance in the mag. It has to free fall from the top to the bottom. Then the mag will function.

I have 6 of the orginal duckbill mags that functioned right out of the package. I guess everyone was manufacturing them after that and they got sloppy.

But remember that no replacement mag is a given that it will work when its installed the first time. I've seen 5 out of 6 new mags in my svt-40 work while the 1 mag needed fitting. Even in my hakims the mags from each gun isn't interchangable so no two guns can be the same too, trust me i know i had 6 hakims at one time.

Some of the yugo sks's come with the night sights(dots). I understand about picking up the front sight but it takes practice. You could also get the glow paint for the front and rear sight too. I have a mosin style scopemount on one of my sks's its rock solid.

Ordered the front and rear sights, and 40 stripper clips. The stripper clips already came in the mail, still waiting on the sights. I did shoot the SKS at my ranch, down into a canyon at an old 55 gallon barrell. At 186 yards, standing freehanded with winchester ammo, I was hitting to the right of the barrell with the original sights. It was fun.

Here is what I did.
1. had the trigger lightened, $35
2. replaced dust cover and put fixed 5x cheap scope $30
4 Replaced stock with fiberglass $40
each step made groups smaller.

Since I did that it put the groups into an honest 1.5-2"

Have killed a couple of deer, close range around 50 yd.
found that mine prefers the 150 gr. Wolf ammo over the 123gr. even better than the Rem ammo.
But as always your mileage may vary.

Sorry Merle, thank you Smokin Joe. Just installed the front fire sight, and it is really bright. Unfortunately when I began to install the rear peep sight, I found that they had not included the roll pin. So, the original rear sight remains on the SKS. But I am going to the range to shoot anyway, and get sighted in with the new fire sight. Once the pin comes in the mail, I will install the rear peep sight and go back to the range. More range time is good.

prairiedog555, have not found 150 gr wolf ammo around here. Did have a friend give me 2 boxes of wolf HP's though. That should be interesting to test out.

I picked up a Russian refurb in great condition and a crate of ammuntion[1120 rounds]I put on a Choate dragunof stock and a set of Williams firesights[front fiber optic and rear peep]By taking off the cheek piece it fits perfectly for open sights.If you unscrew the insert on the peep sight-it is perfectly frames the front sight with the orange dot being very clear.Scoping an SKS is not easy and besides for a 100 yard gun open sights should work fine-these are utility rifles ,not target shooters or finely crafted rifles-the sort of thing you can pack on your quad,simple and tough.I mainly bought it for cheap shooting-you can't reload for the price

I decided to keep it as original as possible, aside from the original sights, and firing pin. I would have installed the rear peep had they included the roll pin in the package. I think the addition of the fire sight up front alone is a major improvement. I hope to sight in at 50 yds tomorrow. Should I stumble across an additional SKS, I might trick it out 100%, but this one is ermaining original.

Mark, the nice thing about these rifles is that most of the modifications mentioned here can be reversed if you decide to later, as long as you save your old parts, and changing the stock can help preserve the original if you use the gun in areas where it would get banged up. Personally I like the original myself like many of the others here have mentioned. I would like to see some pictures of your sights if you get a chance. About the mags, the thing I like most about the original fixed 10 rd mag, besides the fact that they feed so well, it the simple fact that when I shoot off of a bag or sandbag at the range the mag isn't in the way. I have a Russian refurb and it shoots so good, it just makes for a great time at the range.

bunksydad, I will be glad to post some pics once I get the rear sights on. Someone from Williams Sights called me today and apologized for the roll pin not being in the package, and said he ws putting one in the mail today. Looking forward to getting the rear peep on and going to the range...

I put a Choate dragunof stock on mine and installed a williams firesight set[fiber optic front sight and drop in rear peep sight]-works very nicely[can't see open sights anymore and I didn't want to scope it]

nothing wrong with it just the way it is.
I have had an SKS since before they were even imported
into this country by dealers and have never once had a slamfire.
No one I know who has one has ever had a slam fire either?
Now I do know of one that had a "Worn " Sear that would go full auto every time
you squeezed the trigger but a new firing pin would not have solved that.
I think the new firing pin is a "fix" for a non-existant problem. I have never seen
a firing pin break in a CZ-52 pistol either and to hear many talk about them,
they must be made of glass

That peep sight is interesting but way too far forward
for these old eyes of mine.

I have had every aftermarket mag for the sks and have gotten everyone to function after fixing them. On most of them the mag bodies aren't the same width top to bottom so the pusher needs to be sanded until its free top to bottom.

You can also get glow paint for your sights too.

My paratrooper sks will shoot 1 1/2" groups at 100yds benchrested with norinco ammo if i do my part. My son can shoot it that good too. I'm very happy with the accuracy at that range.
