Stevens 200 stock beding Q?
« on: May 09, 2010, 08:20:36 PM »
Getting ready to bed my stock and had a couple Qs???   After looking at the stock I decided to get a piece of 1/2x1/8 Aluminum (Layed flat no flex)
and notch it to fit as close to Recoil Lug as possible, full length to tip of Forarm.   Ive heard of differant Glues/Epoxis but have not heard of this one.  "Goop" it says bonds to PVC and Metal for a forever bond.  10 minutes then bond together and clamp.   Have you guys used this type adhesive before???   I guess this isn't beding so much as stiffening   Look forward to coments and Tips/Ideas    Thanks Jeff    ;)

I've never heard of Goop, but if it stiffens the forearm, that's a good thing.  Those tupperware stock are so flexible that sometimes the forearm touches the barrel just from the weight of the rifle on the bags.

Some folks claim that the flex in Savage stocks comes from the recoil lug area and stiffening the forearm doesn't help unless you address the recoil lug area.  This forum thread at Savage Shooters might be some help.

I have a Stevens 200 in .243 & I don't think that the flex issue is all that bad. Mine won't even come close to touching the barrel from the weight of the barrel on the bags. It does not move at all resting on the bags.  I don't think I could make the barrel touch the stock while shooting it even if I tried. I was worried about this problem when I first got mine but now that I have it  it's not a problem at all.

Goop is kinda rubbery & flexable. I don't think you want to use that. Try some JB weld or something like it.

I think you are looking for a solution to a problem you don't have. I thought about stiffing the fore end on mine when I first bought it and decided to just try it out for awhile after doing some flex testing to see how much was actually there. It's really quite difficult to flex it enough to touch the barrel. I can get .5" groups at 100 yards on a still day. Wrapped it tightly with camo tape and
that had no effect on grouping either in size or placement.

The reason Im doing it is because I use a Bipod some and also shoot using a sling.   Both of them can give you side to side flex.   By me beding a pc. of aluminum 1/8"x1/2"wide all the way from the Recoil Lug to Tip it wont flex.  NOT filling the wells between the ribs, just to secure the Aluminum.  It wont add 2 ounces.  What do you think???       Jeff   :)

If it will make you feel good go ahead and do it. It certainly won't hurt anything. I don't use a bipod and only use a sling to carry the rifle. I use homemade shooting sticks which weigh basically nothing and I don't have them hanging on the rifle. If everyone did things exactly the same way it would be a boring old world.  ;D

I had a flex problem with my Stevens 200 stock. I stiffened it by bonding the barrel to the stock at the forend with black automotive silicon. First I opened the tip area up a bit, cleaned the barrel and the stock with alcohol and put a thick bead of black silicon across the forend and then I carefully but the barreled action into the stock. Works just fine. I did mine to stabilize the stock/barrel together when carrying a sling. I am sure this will work for bipod shooters also. After doing this my 22-250 will put it's favorite load into .6 for 3 shots and it maintains zero perfectly.

Numrich still has 16lss laminated stocks that are pillar bedded for $75. That is a bargain. That is what I BOUGHT FOR MY Stevens 200 20 practical.
