Delisting wolves?
« on: May 10, 2010, 11:18:05 AM »
I'm about 7 miles north of Engadine on Da U.P.  Within the past week, a neighbor lost a calf and a hiefer to wolves.  The State's reimbursing him about half value.  I believe the same wolves, in that time frame, ran a bear through one of my hot fences taking down about 75 yards of it.  I've got livestock and dogs, and I intend to protect them.  I also have a very good chance of drawing a bear tag and I don't want wolves messing it up.  Has anyone heard of progress with delisting?

Fish and Wildlife Service Invites Comment on Applications for Permits for Wolf Activities in Michigan and Wisconsin

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is seeking comments on applications for permits from the states of Michigan and Wisconsin to conduct research, monitoring and management of gray wolves.  The Service published a notice of availability of the permit applications and a draft environmental assessment in the April 20, 2010, Federal Register.

Gray wolves are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act, which prohibits take – killing, harming or harassing - listed species.  Although wolf populations have met recovery goals for the western Great Lakes States, wolves remain protected by the Endangered Species Act.

The permit applications request authorization to conduct activities including lethal and non-lethal take of wolves that attack livestock and pets.  There are approximately 600 wolves in Michigan and a similar number in Wisconsin; Minnesota’s wolf population is estimated at 2,922.

Copies of the permit applications and the draft environmental assessment are available on the Service’s website at http://www.fws.gov/midwest/endangered  Comments may be submitted by U. S. Mail to the Regional Director, Attn:  Peter Fasbender, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ecological Services, 1 Federal Drive, Fort Snelling, MN  55111-4056, or by electronic mail to permitsR3ES@fws.gov   Deadline for submitting comments is May 19, 2010. The Service expects to make decisions on the applications by June 1, 2010.

The mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. We are both a leader and trusted partner in fish and wildlife conservation, known for our scientific excellence, stewardship of lands and natural resources, dedicated professionals and commitment to public service. For more information on our work and the people who make it happen, visit www.fws.gov.

...

The comment period is going on, then after that they will see if it will be taken off the list.  Don't feel bad, we lost 10 calves in 3 weeks and a 1,400 lb cow!  :o And the farmer has yet to get squat since 2001 with the first wolf kill!

Thanks,

Any delisting is years down the road. The 1st step is more allowances(legal) for control & pet/livestock protection. I have heard about guys with wolves in their bear bait pile. I don't think it helps the bear hunting.

The kick in the butt is that they were removed from the endangered list and were under MDNR control for a brief time a couple of years ago.  At that ime, Millers and a couple other local farmers were having problems.  I understand DNR shot eleven wolves and the problem went away for a couple of years.  That window of DNR control didn't last long.  PETA and company brought it to court, got a bleeding heart judge and got them put back on the endangered list.  Both USFWS and MDNR are pushing to get them off.

Whats really needed is an open season on those peta animals. Only downside to it would be that there would be no zones in the UP with huntable numbers. I guess i guy could put up a bow stand on one of the pillers on the bridge. Guess thats part of what gets my craw. Its yuppies from down state and out of state that are fighting to protect them and where they live theres none of them killing there pets or livestock. Id bet most of those idiots will never even see one in there lives unless the wolves start driving bmws and going to starbucks.

Lloyd, they're headed for Starbucks right now.  I haven't been fortunate enough to have one stand and grin at me, (very briefly) but a lot of folks around here have.  The lady next door, half mile up the road was out for her evening excercise walk when she heard crashing around in the bush.  She stopped and looked.  A doe crashed out of the woods and onto the road a few yards from her followed by a wolf.  She waved her arms and yelled at the wolf and he took off southeast and the doe went northwest.  She undoubtedly saved that deer.  She said she was scared to death, and thanked God when the wolf ran off.  We seldom even walk to the barn without having a Handi handy.  We don't even let the dog out (90 lbs of Great Dane, Boxer and Pit Bull) without turning on the lights first and walking the porch.  He's shorthaired and old, and a wolf would make mincemeat of him.

I just came back from a few days in the U.P.. I did not see a single deer on my trip(Baraga county). I saw one wolf near Alberta, in the daytime, & a coyote elsewhere. I left for home at 3:30 A.M.. In the dark to early morning I did not see a single deer from Baraga co to Crivitz WI, and further South.  I also saw 2 porcupines, but gave them a pass.
