130g Barnes 308 loads

Have you heard any feedback or developed any great loads for the 130 TTSX for a Remington LTR 308?

I have Lapua brass, CCI BR primers and Varget on hand

the LTR with a Jewell trigger shoots one ragged hole, 5 shots I can cover with a dime with the 165g Sierra 165g BSTP and 44.5g of Varget with a COAL of 2.80

I would love to try the 130s in it if I could get it to shoot as well.

I'd say with Gamekings shooting like that....why bother with them expensive barnes bullets?

I just do a lot of hog hunting, and sometimes you are up close, Barnes hold together
been using them in my 6.8 for a few years and they are just awesome
in the interest of disclosure, I am on the Barnes pro staff, so, cost isn't a factor

basically with the 130, I would be getting a 270 for all intents and purposes in a short action 20" barrelled gun, assuming I can get them to shoot well

Hmmm while the weights might be the same the frontal impact area is not so really a .308 can never be a .270. As too loads nope I have never used Barnes and unless they ban lead here I doubt I ever will as I see no real need for them. Add to that that ever barrel is different then t as far as I can see the only way to get loads that really suit your rifle is develop them in YOUR RIFLE. Sorry can't be more help.

Some time ago, after running the ballistics on 130g .308” bullets, I came to the conclusion they don’t offer much except low BC, SD and downrange energy.   Decided to stick with the 165/168’s.  Up close trajectory isn’t an issue, longer range I’d rather compensate a tad more and have the higher energy.


Not a member of the Barnes Pro Staff, but I also run Barnes bullets  in my .308 Win.

Actually I do shoot Hornady 130 Grn SP's in a 30-30 and a .308. have not worked up a good load in the 30-06 yet. A long shot is 200 yards and our deer are generally smaller and they shot very well indeed and drop the dear as requested. What more could I ask for.

Presnetly I am shooting some Federal Fusion factory 150 grain ammo in the .270 Winchester and it's work out very well. So well I have ordered two boxes in 25-06 to try out.

If cost is no issue...well...I enjoy working up a new recipe too.If it were me.....I'd start with either or both IMR-4895 or H-4895 and if neither get you there Varget.Also had good results with BLC2 in .308 but one of the others was always slightly better.Have fun with it.

    I just got a box of Barnes 30 cal.  130 gr. TSX bullets to try in a 308 Win. single shot rifle.
I plan on trying H 4895 to start with, I plan on using them this fall on Antelope in Wyoming.    Jed

I use Norma 201 with Barnes X 110gr in me 06 3400fps zoom-zoom

You might want to go over to Norma and check out the 308 specs

    I shot some of the 130 gr. TSX loads today.  So far only loaded them with H 4895 and CCI primers, my best groups today came with a load of 48.2 grs. of H 4895 and the TSX seated to a OAL of 2.800 it shot under 7/8" ( 3 shots) a couple of times with 2 almost in the same hole.
  The rifle I am shooting is a Remington/ Bialkal single shot in 308 win. the barrel is a pencil thin hammer forged 23.5" and with 3 shots gets quite warm to the touch.
   That load is lightly compressed at 48.2 grs. it averaged 3070 FPS with a ES of only 13.6 FPS.
I have some Varget that might work good with this bullet I will try that powder next, Barnes data shows Varget as one of there prefered loads for the 130 TSX.
   Being my rifle is a single shot and will be used for hunting I really only care where the first shot out of a cold barrel will go, when I find a load I like I will try some groups with a long time between shots to see if the thin barrel is sensitive as I think it might be.      Jedman

Similar to Jedman, I used H-4895, however my loads were from a Ruger Compact with a 16.5" barrel. The loads were also reduced for my grandson, however they shot very well in fact he could keep groups most of the time less than 1" at 100yds. For a 5 thru 8yr old to consistently do that it has to say a little somethin about the load combo.
