.45LC Survivor ballistics?
« on: May 11, 2010, 04:01:49 AM »
Has anyone chornographed .45lc out of the survivor model?  Im wondering how much velocity is lost as a result of the huge jump the bullet has to make from the 3 inch chamber to the rifling.

Could the survivor with a stout .45lc load be used as a close range (25 yards or less) deer gun?

Thanks for the help.

You should get adequate groups at 25yrds to be able to shoot deer with and just about any load 45 colt will kill deer at 25.Lots of guys use 45 revolvers for short range deer hunting depending on how well it shoots 50is doable. Kurt

Thanks Kurt for the input.  H&R has discontinued so many really viable calibers like the .357 Max and they keep this abortion hanging around.  Who wants a rifle good to 25 or 50 yards.  God made rocks for that.  You can use a 22 inch .410 loaded with slugs and do much better, and better still with shot.  Nuf said.

Pete,

Seems you are unhappy with your 45LC.   I know a good home for your long colt in NW Ohio if it is really giving you a hard time. ;)  I even have the 22" .410 w/rail & reddot if you want to trade. ;D

I think Pete loves his 45LC Carbine, the 45/410 Survivor is the "abortion" Pete's referring to I'm pretty sure which is the topic of this thread.  ;)

I share Pete's sentiment on the 45/410, it's certainly not on my Handi want list.  ::)

I here that!! Been there done that. I even went so far as to try and make the 410 brass cases work . Buy when you can't just put one or the other shell in with out either putting on or taking off the choke detwister thingy...it makes no sence. What made sence was a 45colt carbine with 385gr bullets doin about 1500. Or carrying a smooth bore 410 with one shell each in your hand. That will get there attention. Kurt

I have one, its okay, I drilled and tapped it for a red dot and id have NO problem taking a shot at a  deer at 50yds, Id even shoot at more than that. but not a LOT more.
the .410 portion of that gun works just fine too.

As to the ballistics, meh, I can only guess I dont shoot enough 45's out of it to have a want or need to check.
but itll damn sure kill a deer at 25yds, the ones up here arent made of kevlar  ;D

Have fun with it.

If they were made of Kevlar, the 45 colt would stun them, then you could run the 25 yards and club the deer to death with the buttstock! ;D :o

I pick up my .45 Carbine Monday and I expect it to be a 100 yd deer rifle, maybe even just a little more.  And most of that will depend on my eyes, more so than the capibility of the gun.  If you were to ask Lloyd Smale what he considers the max hunting range of a good .45 colt handgun, you'd likely be surprised!  And then consider putting Ruger level loads into the Handi makes it even better.  If you would like info on the ballistics of the .45 in rifle barrels, check out http://www.leverguns.com/articles/paco/45coltlevergun.htm.  There is a lot of good info there, and I'd consider it required reading for any .45 colt handi shooter.  I consider the .45, properly loaded to be an excellent hunting gun.  44 Man

If those numbers are accurate, they are easily within the safe pressure range of an H&R.

Factory firearms are SB1 in 45/410, it's also available in 223 and 308 on SB2 frames.

So the load data in this thread should be for a 45LC on an SB-2 frame, not a SB1 45/410?

There are two different firearms discussed in this thread, the 45/410 Survivor(Original post) which is an SB1 firearm, and the CR-45 45 Colt BC Carbine which is an SB2, the 45/410 barrel should be on an SB2 frame when using heavy Colt(Ruger/TC/ +P) loads.

The old timey trade guns were large bore and not rifled.  They worked with a soliid load or shot.  What it boils down to today is, you can make a rifle out of a shotgun, but you can't efficiently make a shotgun out of a rifle.  You loose both somewhere in between. ;D  I suggested to H&R that they work with some of the Pistol calibers.  Bring back the .357 Max, Ream a few .44s to  .445, ream some of the .45s to .454 and .460.  It all fell on deaf ears.

The thing that gets me with the Maxi is that Remington MADE the round.  They've got to have the tooling to put it back into production.  It certainly is not unpopular.

My favorite .45 colt load is a 255 gr swc over 20 gr of 4227.  This is a top level 'single action colt' safe load.  Does not exceed the pressure of a +P acp load.  This load will do everything I want to do with a .45 colt and should be safe in any SB1 frame.  44 Man
