Contenders vs. rifles
« on: May 11, 2010, 11:04:20 AM »

I'm sorry if there was some confusion about the question I was asking about shooting in the USBR matches, but what I'm wanting to know is if the rimfire pistols would have the degree of accuracy needed to compete against the rifles?

I know my .30-30 Super 14 I had was more accurate than any levergun I ever had. At that tiem I could place three round at 50 yards in a perfect cloverleaf with all three holes touching. FWIW that was with 28 gr. of 3031 and a Speer 150 gr. Spire Point loaded with a Lee Loader.

I can't say that my 12" bull barrel Custom Shop Contender barrel in 22LR will win any matches, but it will hang with any rifle that I've ever owned - or any body else's that I've ever seen.  It will "dot and I" at 50 yards, even with cheap ammo!

Hope that helps!

Contender pistols are accurate no doubt but benchrest rifles are in a different category I think. There are benchrest pistols available and if you showed up with one of those I bet you would give the rifle guys a run for their money. All in all I would say if a Contender pistol is legal to use there's nothing wrong with going out and competing against yourself. You don't have to be in contention to win in order to learn a lot and have a good time. In the process you'd learn how to squeeze every bit of accuracy out of that Contender you could.

I can shoot my Contender in creedmore position better than I can shoot my rifle standing.  If you were competing standing vs standing or bench vs bench, the rifle will likely win.  If you let me in creedmore position with my 10" contender barrel and you are standing with a rifle, I will beat you every time.

Just the facts of stability in the creedmore position and accuracy of the TC.

Steve P is right . I shot the sil rifle match using a 7BR XP-100 and beat most of the scoped rifles there .  I had open sights but i got to shoot from a creedmore position they stood . I had shot the long targets before and had sight settings it was not cold turkey shooting .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

As stated above a pistol is not going to be competitive with a true bench gun but I have used my contender with a set of georgia Jim grips just for the fun of it in a online match on another forum .In the two matches i tried I won the first one and tied for first in the another . I tied a anschutz and beat a volkartsen (spelling?) 10/22 along with a bunch of factory rifles .

TC products can surely whip some rifles when put together right, but If I am going against BR rifles, then I would rather use one of my XP's or my MOA.
Most the time a well put together TC can beat a regular rifle.

Had exact grips on a blued pistol with a Leupold hg scope. Would out shoot anything I had less a cz. But was real close to it. I imagine the big scope you have on that one would be more accurate than mine was. I can't remember what is shot but my 10/22 rigs are all under .5 at 50. The cz I have not played with in awhile so I can't remember what it shot either.

I know that my 22LR Match Encore barrel by MGM will hold it's own in a match and I have a whole lot less money in it than a true custom bench gun
