Greetings from Northern Michigan
« on: May 12, 2010, 01:10:22 PM »
Hello, folks.  I have been reading the posts on this forum for some time, and gotten some great ideas and advice.  This is my first post, however.  I have two half scale cannons, and hopefully some pictures will follow.  The bronze in the field carriage was purchased as is.  The other cannon features a naval carriage that I built using oak.  It is based on some plans I found for the carriages on The Constitution.

I also bought a soda can mortar from Dominick last Fall.  Have not shot it yet, but looking forward to doing so on Memorial Day.  But, it looks like it will be great!

Just wanted to say hello, and thank you all for your help even though you didn't know you were helping.  And, I also appreciate the lead on the steel golf ball sized balls.  I have already purchased quite a few.

I am a bit further north than Brighton, just north of Midland.  We are just far enough north that to us going "Up North" requires one to cross the Mackinac Bridge or risk being a liar.  Always some good cannons to see at the forts in Mackinac City and the Island, though.

Thanks for all of the welcomes.

lthardman,
First of all, I offer you a hearty welcome, and secondly; you've got some fine looking ordnance! If you don't mind answering, who's the manufacturer of the bronze field gun?
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

I have owned the bronze field gun for over ten years.  It was made by Dean Duvall of Lake, Michigan.  While he had the tubes cast for him, and then polished them out, the carriage is 100% hand made by Dean.  Fittings and all.  The tube was cast solid and then bored.

The naval tube was made by Dean Lardie of Onondaga, MI.  His cannon business goes by the name Gunsmoke Cannons, and I believe they have been listed on GBO before.  This gun has a 4140 steel sleeve, a pinned and welded breech, a reduced size chamber, and has a cast iron exterior around the sleeve.  I designed and made the carriage, starting from plans I found on the internet for the carriages on the USS Constitution.   Of the two cannons, this is the better shooter.  The field gun is pretty, and can make a lot of noise.  But, I trust the naval gun a bit more for shooting.

Of course the mortar came from Dominick, who is well known in these parts.  And, great to do business with, I might add.  I also purchased some new implements (worms) from Dominick, and I have been very pleased with those.
