Thanks, Oyvind: What these crews did in these competitions was truly impressive. You'll notice that in the title of this vid it says 'not the last'. I'm not sure if that's true; the black armbands on these navy men represent this being the last (108th) competition, run in this exact manner. There was a public outcry that wanted the tradition to be carried on, but as far as I know the rough obstacle course part of the event was entirely done away with. The reasons for stopping the competitions had to do with the number, and severity of injuries the crewmen were suffering in practicing for, and while competing in, the real event.

Thanks for posting this one, I haven't seen it before, and all I can say is outstanding. The precision displayed by these six horse teams, and their drivers is really something to behold.

My pleasure, Boom J. That driving is indeed impressive, that much speed in such tight quarters. The number of horses needed for just one battery is something I try to get through to people at demonstrations. Often all they see is one or two guns and short crews. No limbers, horses, caissons, etc. The logistics of keeping about 100 horse per battery was a huge problem. Not to mention the opportunities for nasty, dirty jobs for slackers, malingerers, and other petty malefactors.

I was impressed with the relative ease that they were able to flip the gun back over. And that it didn't seem to suffer any from that hard use.

When I was at Michigan State University, we had a very similar drill when we would sneak a keg to the fourth floor of the dorms using the stairs. I was the muscle so I would be just as out of breath as those guys.

We don't get to get a very good look at that gun but 1900 kg is 4180 lbs. That gun doesn't look that heavy. A full scale Napoleon on a #2 carriage doesn't weigh that much.

Ah, two of the articles I saw on the Swartkop said 1900 kg. But if it is "only" 1300 kg, I don't see what the big deal is - two, three people tops, to drag it up that hill.

There used to be a few more of the SC on the web, but all but that Youtube and the one on the SC site seem to be gone now.

I have been at the bottom of Wagon Hill and the top of Wagon Hill. They say the slope is 1:1 for 130 meters. That is a 45 degree slope I think and I think that hill is steeper than that is steeper than that.

Those guns might weigh 2860 lbs. The gun in the previous post probably has only 42" wheels. That size wheel could never support that size barrel. My full scale Parrott rifle had 57" wheels and only weighed about 2000 lbs.
