Saw a Handi and need soem help.
« on: May 13, 2010, 01:52:03 PM »
I was in a local gunshop today and saw a nice used handy, green lam stock heavy barrel (.270) $199.00. Now my question is what exactly is the difference between the H&R ultra rifle and this particular handi? I put it on hold to do some research, as I feel $199 to be a good price even though i don't care  to own a .270. Can you pros help me? Ohh yea it had the scope base installed also and no sights so i assume it is all factory done.

A few years back the only difference between the H&R ultra and a NEF handy rifle was cosmetic as far as I could tell. The Ultra rifle had a little nicer finish on the reciever and barrel. They also had a laminated stock set with checkering. The NEF handy rifle usually had the "pallet wood" stock, but sometimes had a laminated stockset with no checkering. The finish on the reciever and barrel had a more coarse finish. This has been my observations at least, but Quick will probably be able to clarify better since he probably has the most handi rifles of anyone here.( it's no wonder none of the rest of us can find any of the really cool stuff, because he beats us to it!) :D

$199.00 for a Ultra 270 is a darn good price..Check the lock up on it by taking the forearm screw off and trying to wiggle the barrel while it's locked up.If it's good and tight..open it and look down at the locking shelf and check for even wear across the shelf face. Also check the numbers on the barrel lug and make sure they match the numbers on the frame and if there is any shims on the pivot area on the lug or wrapped around the hinge pin..Also check the crown area for burrs and damage..and check the bore for any pitting while your at it..If eveything looks good..I say go for it if you like it....The Ultras were finished a lot nicer usually and seemed to fit up much better than the regular Handi's..When you get it..pick up some Federal Fusion ammo for it..all of mine seem to like that ammo a-lot and have shot exceedingly accurate with it. BTW..the Ultras had the longer scope rail on them and have a set screw up at the front..it's a little larger than the ones that hold the rail on and you can see it on the side..If the screw is down and touching the barrel..you will want to raise it up till just barely doesn't touch at all..this was meant for the very large objectives of the scopes..

Good Luck

Well i did buy it and in all honesty it was an impluse buy, however; it is in beter shape than the 25-06 i just paid 279 for. It is tight as far as i can tell and well eventho i have no use for the 270 with a green lam stock and the h&r gold logo, I want to be part of the club and they are dependable, Ohh and i was out at the parrents farm today and sniped a black bird at 170 (or so) yd with the 25-06! love the nikkon scopes. thanks for the help.

What's wrong with a .270? Probably not much difference between it and a 25-06. They are both based on the same case If I remember correctly.

There's quite a difference in max bullet weight available for the 270 over the 25-06, 120gr is pretty much max in .257", 160gr are commonly available in .277", they're both 1:10" twist in an H&R, so I won't get into the VLD bullets.

I was just kinda wondering why the OP didn't care to own a .270.Maybe a 25-06 shoots just a little flatter?Slightly less recoil?

The biggest difference in an H&R is the 25-06 has a 26" barrel which which really can help velocities, the 270 only comes in 22" except for very few special edition models that had 24" barrels.

I'm one of those guys who doesn't own or shoot a .270.  Not that I don't realize that it's a great cartridge, not that I don't realize that lots of folks love it.  It's simply one of those calibers with which I've never been acquainted.

I love the .25-06 and I have a deep and abiding fondness for the .30-06.  With those two calibers in my battery, I've got the .270 bracketed nicely.  And, with a bow to the genius of Jack O'Connor, I'll wish you .270 shooters all the best.

Nice! Well after some thinking the two recent ultra rifles that i have purchased were impulse buys and I am very happy with them, I was and still in the market for a magnum caliber rifle (which is what i was looking for when i happened upon both the 25-06 and .270) I wish i could get an h&R in a 300 or 7mm mag.
