Back when I worked on firearms I had seen just about every type of extractor fail at one time or another. Rem's little stamped spirng may be cheap but it works about as reliably as any. I believe the biggest advantage of Paul Mausers design is more applicable to the military civilians. What it does that many before it did not, is prevent double loads.. Little spring clips and claws can pull a casse out of a chamber just fine but for the most part thay can not prevent a double feed.
People are like slinkies, they serve no purpose yet they bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

No one really needs controled round feed until they really need it ! Most shoot with the gun in a position where a push feed will work ok . But in a combat situation you may have to cycle your gun in a position that may have the gun upside down or otherwise . Then strength takes a back seat to working .

What Shootall said, but also professional hunters in Africa prefer them when hunting dangerous game.  American deer hunters don't really need them unless in big bear country.
