Conical, hollow base projectiles, accuracy and ability to cast?

I mainly leave you little guys alone, because i don't figure you'll live long enough on this forum. But since i read through this whole topic, i'll say this much: you guys need a new act.............always someone coming along who don't know what sabots are for,yet they own cannons. Not to mention the other questions mentioned in this topic, same old boring stuff, that you cannon owners should already know.

So tell me Lance how does one learn, if they don't ask.  Are you saying you shouldn't own a cannon until you know every thing there is to know about cannons?  Why?

Gee Whiz! When I started this thread, I was thinking....If I have to cast, what options are out there besides a round ball? Envisioned a stout foster that had enough mass in the front that the charge wouldn't blow through. The gas expands the base, resulting in a better seal, higher velocity and it may or may not tumble. Seemed reasonable. When asked about sabots, I responded with what the 1st thing that popped into my mind which is probably the most effective sabot round out there. I'm  trying to learn and have enough confidence in myself that I can admit I don't everything about pre 1900 artillery pieces.
I sincerely appreciate the comments and help.

God Knows I asked more questions than you could shake a stick at . I asked and asked and asked , things were "splained to me " . but it was never enough splainin ..... I didnt get it ...not one bit .but the bug had bitten . proly 1000 or so comunicas .

Thank You for your patience Dan  it has paid off , Thank You again . 1 .3 years ago I had only cast lead bullets . Now I have done something !

I was infomed sometime back that I too was boring  . Yea , whats new ? It's the invisablity thing that they were teaching in USMC (Yousmak) towards the end of the Vietnam war , after the surgery you cant do much about it . Invisable and boring , low ohms resistance too , looking for lightning . 

I for one would like you "to leave us fry alone" , if you throw a stone , two may come back ?

I remember visiting a shop in Petersburg (about 20 minutes before the tornado tore it up) where I saw the winning target from the N-SSA nationals that year.  The holes were clean cut circles from a 'wadcutter' cast from lead.

It was one diameter long and had a hollow base.  The cavity was about 3/4 deep into it.  The wall thickness was about 3/8 or 1/2".  Flat front.  

Obviously the crew did something right too.

Cat Whisperer, the projectile you described is really, really close to what I was thinking. So I'm not nuts!
Can't wait to tell the wife though she probably needs more evidence.   Wad cutter style... could possibly use a disposable  / sacrificial mold or maybe the mold goes downrange with the projectile. (inverted can) though that gives up the seal at the base.

I started with cannons as a youngster. My grandpa built my 1st one. Shot small bore NRA matches as a junior. Saved my school lunch money to buy ammo, shot precision air rifle (New England NRA Regional's at MIT), Cherry Point Rifle Team ect  but going off topic here. Finally got to the point in life that I could have bigger toys.

Rocklock1: Uncle Sams Misguided Children....I too, though didn't pay the dues you did. Just a REMF, MOS 6646 Nothing special, worked on A4's and AV8A's 1975 - 1979.
Main duty station = Cheerless Point by the town of Havenot. Remember that being invisible was a really, really good strategy at Parris Island!

Watched a big lathe with a 8 ft bed, 3 jaw chuck, tail stock & tool post go for $250.00 at a local farm auction yesterday. Thought of you guys.

Cheerless Point, my son was was created MEMQ...holy smokes! I just "google earth" the base and that WWII housing for officers given JR. enlisted men during Vietnam years and scheduled for destruction is still standing.
