Cheap 308 bolt action.

I seen a saiga bolt action rifle being offered in the CDNN investments flyer for around $300.

In the same flyer there were remington bolt action rifles which were imported from russia with the remington name on them.  These had mauser actions. I will post the model numbers later.

I've seen a number of good Interarms for under $300.  Would go that route first.

Better yet, I'd look for a good used Ruger and Remington .308 and would pay more for them.

They are very nice for the money and made in good long action calibers too.

Stevens is a great buy for a "working rifle" I bought a .300 win mag for $315 NIB and apparently their new Edge is lower priced The Steven is the Savage 110 action minus the accutrigger, Great Rifle shoots well and is accurate for the money.

I paid less than $260 for my Marlin XS7 .308 at Academy Sports.

The ones stamped Remington are better than the others because they had to pass Remington standars and inspection.

If you want a cheap .308 consider the new Savage Edge.  Not bad for $250.00.

None of the Remingtons I looked at (and I looked at a lot of them) impressed me at all.

Every one of them felt like it had sand in the action. 

For much less money I found I could buy a good used Interarms that was slick as glass – prices were consistently around $300.  In fact, I ended up buying a NIB Interarms Mark X action, A Savage 111, a couple Rem 700's and a couple Rugers instead of the "Remington" Mausers.  One of the Rem 700’s was new, as was the Savage.  The others were used.  In every case I was much happier than I would have been with a gritty “Remington” Mauser.

For what it is worth, The Ruger MKII/Hawkeye design is arguably the best commercial instantiation of the Mauser design available.  Smooth, reliable, accurate, rugged, good looking – pretty much the definition of what I want in a rifle.

I find the older used rifles are more expensive nowadays.  There getting out of wack ever since 9/11 or what ever.  I'd like to get a new 308 and maybe a new 30-06.  I may checkout walmart rather than my local gun shops.  I just don't see any real deals or affordable prices like we once did.

The russian saiga semi auto in 308win with the short 16" barrel is unmatched in its ak/akm performance/design and its price there still under $500 and even cheaper when there used too.  These guns just don't wearout too.  I'm getting 1 1/2" groups @ 100yds using south african surplus 308 ball ammo and i'm sure that reloads can tighten things up too.  Thats with no scope too.

My '94 remington 700 in 338 win mag will shoot two bullets thru the same hole at 100yds using winchester super x ammo.  My point is will a new rifle today do that good?

My brothers old interarms 30-06 was another awesome accurate rifle too.

So which one today is the best bolt action rifle for an affordable low cost?

If you can buy the rifle you really want, at a fair price, you will probably keep it for several decades.  Looking at it that way, it is not really expensive to get what you want.  Quality firearms are good investments and rarely loose value.  The same can be said for quality scopes and binoculars.

That is true, but I saw some good used rifles at reasonable prices at the Tanner gun show in Denver earlier today.  True, you have to search for them as the number of over-priced pieces far outnumber the good deals that can be had.

+1. I usually go to gun shows twice. First thing Saturday morning to see if there any bargains that won't last the weekend. And then again on Sunday afternoon. That's when you have the best leverage on the dealers if you're interested in buying something.

If patient, you can find most anything used that you want in the condition you want it but if you want to walk into your local sporting goods retailer and walk out with a new rifle in the ~$300 range, you are going to have a hard time beating cost vs. value of the Stevens 200 or the Marlin XS7. 

I read up on the Savage Edge yesterday and I'm not convinced it is a better deal than the Stevens 200 due to trigger mechanism and lack of adjustability.  I did not check to see if the aftermarket trigger makers make a trigger for it yet but that is going to take it up over target price if you have to do that.
