357 at the range.
« on: May 15, 2010, 03:10:55 PM »
Took the 357 out for a little stroll at the range the other day, and met a nice young fellow there with a $3000.00 pistol.  He was quite taken with my 357's accuracy, and I was not at all impressed with his custom 45acp with all the bells and whistles.

With a lazer at 20' he was holding about 12" to 14".  Certainly enough for a man stopper, but not all that accurate in my book.  My old rusty Smith "police special" from the 40's will out do that.

He began asking questions about the Handi and was amazed that a gun that cost under $300.00 would even shoot!  Someone had convinced him that the more he spent, the better he would hit the target.  I worked with him on breath control, etc. a short while, and he was showing improvement.  He was also going to order himself a Handi if I'm not mistaken! ;D

Ya done good man. Some people need to learn for themselves first hand. Like the old saying, you can tell some people and they'll believe you. Others have to pee on the electric fence for themselves.

I was hunting woodcock as a 14 year old in Nu Joisey when I crawled under a pasture fence, one hand on the muddy ground and the other on my shotgun.  Ya gotta know the shotgun touched the wire.  Today, I have about two miles of electric fence, and I'm a lot more careful.

I don't own an AR or other fancy semi-autos.....cause I can have five Handis instead, doing the same thing, but one bullet at a time.  It is refreshing when you meet a wealthy person who's down to earth and not a Handi-snob.

I could resemble that remark.  Not saying that I do, or don't.  Just that I could.   ;D

Nothing wrong with somebody spending their money on something they want. I bet it was more the shooter's skill level than his handgun. You will find most people at the range don't know much about firearms. It is always a good thing to pass along knowledge if someone is willing to listen. Most people I see have "magnumitis" or have something that absolutely beats them up. These people are the ones that think they need a 338 Winchester magnum to kill a whitetail and think "I can shoot farther away". Most I have seen can't shoot a group under the size of a beachball at 100 yards. If they would get something that was a little more tame they would probably be better able to hit the target. To me you are more of a man being able to shoot well, than how big a gun you have.

$3,000 is a lot to spend on a pistol when you are just starting out. Chances are he'll trade it before he gets really good with it. But a high end 1911 can be a real joy too. I spent $1,800 on a Baer .38 Super, my most expensive firearm by far, and it is the most satisfying gun I've ever owned, but I've been shooting handguns seriously for 15 years or more and can take advantage of most of it's accuracy.
OTOH, my $85 .357 barrel for my Handi is still more accurate, that's satisfying too.

There is a youtube vid of an old codger smacking cans out of there air with a slingshot better than 99.99% could with a shotgun. It ain't the arrow, it is the Indian.

This thread really turned interesting. In the 1920 through about 1980 there were two brothers out in Barstow, Ca. "The Wilhelm Brothers"  that were really good with a bow and arrow. Ken was probably the better of the two, he made a habit of shooting biscuits out of his brother (Will) mouth from about 15-20 yards. But thats not all he could do. In 1924 The Yankee's came to L.A. for an exhibition baseball game. Ken played on the minor league that played them. He threw 15 pitches to the "Babe" and struck him out 5 times. Its all in the hand/eye coordination, some got it most don't.
