Stainless Steel Bisley Grip Conversion Kit?
« on: May 16, 2010, 05:53:04 PM »
Anybody know a good source for a stainless steel Bisley Grip Conversion Kit for a 45 colt Blackhawk? All I can find is a blue steel at Brownnells. Thanks

Midway carries the stainless version but they're currently out of stock.

It requires minor fitting to match the frames. Should not be to hard for most.

POWHS

A while back, I ran across a 4 3/4 Super Blackhawk .44 mag in stainless.  A Little scratched up, but decent.  Shot it, and wow, really accurate, but this model has the regular Blackhawk grip, which just does not fit my hand.  I ordered a Super Blackhawk Dragoon type grip frame from the Ruger NH plant.  It is a casting, a little rough, and does have to be fit to the frame of the gun.  You will need to remove metal to match the contours of the gun, then polish.  I decided to give the whole gun a polish and a set of nice Rosewood grips, and it came out good.  Some fine files, a Dremel type tool with a polishing type head along with some 100, 200, 400, and 600 grit emery cloth, and a cotton buffing wheel on a drill press with some fine metal polish will get the job done.  Just take your time to match the contours of the gun.  The Bisley grip frame should be very similar, except you will need the bisley hammer and trigger as well.  Go on line to Ruger and download an exploded view of the innards of the gun - it makes re-assembly a lot easier.  Oh yea, don't forget a small brass punch, a clean work surface, and some small trays to place small parts in.  A nice weekend project.

Just got my cylinder back from Cylindersmith.com where they reamed it out to .4525. It shoot lead bullets great now. I found a blued frame but am holding out for a SS Bisley. Had this one in a tree last week. Hoping for a shot next season.

irold, i have done two of these bisley conversions, a Single six and a NMBH. I am not a gunsmith. I was able to switch out the hammer, trigger, and grip frame with the takedown instructions in the Ruger manual. If you can get your gun apart and reassembled you should be able to do the job....Mike

A LOT easier to get the pins rather than hammer them out of the current frame.  The hex head screws are a LOT easier too as the heads on the slotted screws make it difficult with the Bisley grip frame.  For what little amount these parts cost, it's worth the hassle.  If it's worth doing... ;)

Have had a few BH's Bisley-ized. For my time, I send it off to be perfectly fitted to the cylinder frame.  If you have the patience and time, it is a pretty straight forward task.
