New to me 686 Followed me Home
« on: May 17, 2010, 03:12:43 AM »
We have a very popular buy, sell, trade magazine here and I'm always looking for deals on guns. A 4 inch 686 followed me home yesterday from a guy advertising in it. While I do love my single actions the slick action on these Smiths is really nice. Looked new but someone had been shooting 38's in it and hadn't cleaned the cylinder in a while. Took a bit of scrubbing to clean them out and get it to where a 357 mag would chamber in it. Now I've got about six different loads with different weight bullets to try out in it and see what it likes. I hear the range calling after work today.

After running 125 JHP's, 158 SWC's, 158 JHP's, 170 SWCGC's, 180 cast FP's and 187 FNGC's thru it the big heavies won. It grouped ok with all of them but best with the 187 FNGC's over 14 grains of Lil Gun. Approx speed was 1350 fps. I can live with that.

I have always been a fan of the Smith L frames.  I carried a 586 for years as a duty weapon.  I think the extra weight under the barrel makes for a little quicker recoil recovery during quick double action shooting.  The K frame size grip makes for a good fit to most folks hands.

I have a 586 4 inch and a 686 6 inch. Both are wonderful revolvers. My 686 is topped with an Ultra dot 30.

Love my 686 six inch.

I love mine also.......and so does everyone else that has shot them. Mine actually prefer 158 jacketed to anything else. I quit using Lil' Gun in them first because they would get much hotter when shooting them than with other powders. Got so after 30 rounds or so on a warm day you couldn't hardly touch them without lettin' 'em cool down. Have never experienced this with other powders and same number of rounds. Wasn't just with the L-frames but with my N-Frames and X-Frames also. Talked to other folk that had noticed the same thing. Then info started to appear that Lil' Gun led to premature forcing cone erosion. Altho none of my guns showed evidence of this, the heat issue makes me think there's something to it. I've decided since H110/W296 works just as well for my needs in .357, and actually better in the N-Frames and the .460, I'll use what's left of my Lil' Gun in my carbines.

Enjoy your new Smith.

bought one used a number of years ago, 4" bbl mag-n-ported. gives new meaning to muzzle blast, but very good control. have not shot much in recent years, but will keep as my oldest son has laid claim to it. it was the first stainless i ever owned and took awhile to get used to other than a blued finish. they are excellant revolvers.
