This would be funny, if it was not so believable by some people.  My Aunt (My Mom's Sister) fell for this type of scam.  They have cleaned out her accounts to the tune of about $140K.  Every thing she had is now gone off shore and nothing can be done about it.  Here she is 79 and suddenly flat broke.  And now the bills are rolling in where they have stolen her identity and are opening credit cards and accounts in her name.  She just cannot believe those nice people would do this to her, it's got to be a mistake.  They were too nice to her on the phone.

Fortunately her Granddaughter is married to an Atourney and has taken over all her finances.  She is trying to save the farm, and her home.

  A couple years ago I got a regular (snail mail) letter from a similar millionaire-maker in Nigeria. I wasn't about to take the bait anyway, but this letter was crudely written, sloppily assembled and dirty...can't imagine they expected anyone to bite.
   It is however, a very low crime to treat someone as they treated sourdough's aunt and I do hope they get theirs.
 
  As I turned the aforesaid letter over to our local postmaster, he told me the USPO is sending complaints to Nigeria every day...and getting no response..  I wouldn't be surprised if the govt officials were involved in this heartless scam.

Always wondered what would happen if you sent a letter back stating to were ready to release/receive  funds but our  bank needs their banks routing number to their accounts.  ;D Then we just us the reverse process and suck their accounts dry.  ;D This really does need to be stopped and cracked down on. My grandmother almost fell for similar scam. She was 83 at the time. They prey on the elderly folks. In her case we were fortunate and stopped her in time.

Scam!  What are you guys talking about?  This guy is a Doctor... a doctor wouldn't lie.   

You know, I really don't feel sorry for the exceptionally dumb and or exceptionally greedy who fall for these kinds of scams. I figure they have it coming.  But I really get miffed when elderly folks get hosed by these butt holes.

These tactics are despicable, but sometimes I wonder just how people keep falling for these.

These scams have been all over the net (and the news) for over a decade now.  Heck I even read one news article where the victim in question kept sending money even though her neighbors and family had flat out told her that it was a well-known scam. 

Falling for it at all . . . . I'm not even going to say that's understandable, but I'll grant some leeway.  But keeping at it after you've explicitly been told it's a scam?  That's just bad.

Just to be sure at work we literally filter out email that mentions the word "nigeria".  I'm not even sure why they persist in referencing that country anymore.  It's such a red flag for "SCAM" in in email that you'd think they'd have gotten creative and mixed it up a bit more.

HEY! That and a dozen more are all promised to ME upon receipt of my account numbers!! Buzz Off!! ;)

Yeah right, like that's going to happen.....

Anything too good to be true is false....

How about the one about the widow who has your same surname somewhere in N. Africa and the Gov't is going to confiscate her huge account unless you "help" her get it out of country into "your account" then you get half? I thougtht that was what Swiss bank accounts were for???

About a year ago I heard about some hot shot computer folks who turn the tables on those African scam artists.  They set up fake accounts or something and play like they are going to send a bunch of money. They get the scammer to run all over the countryside and especially try to send them to really dangerous places and really play with the guy.  I think they nearly got one guy killed by getting him to hang out in some city where an armed uprising was going on.  They got him to use up all his own funds, and left him stuck in that really dangerous city. I can't remember much more than that. But the reporter started asking them about the ethics of their revenge.  I couldn't help wonder tho that if enough scammers got taken to the cleaners themselves, it might reduce the harassment of US folks.

Since I posted some property for sale on a statewide computer list, I am getting all kinds of scam mail. Glad I used a special email address for that.

That Dr. might be a long lost relative to the Brother staying in the crib in D.C., and you know he may be helping the Aunt of the Brother who is here ILLEGALLY.   Just a thought.   Jim
