Bought me a 50
« on: May 18, 2010, 10:22:53 AM »
I've always wanted a 50 BMG rifle but couldn't justify buying one at the current prices... but the other day I was cruising one of the gun forum "for sale" sections and came across a Bohica Arms complete rifle for $2200.

It came with 40 rounds of match ammo, a full cleaning kit, and a Sightron scope.

Since I've acquired it I've taken the Bohica stock off and replaced it with a Magpul PRS. I took off the palm swell grip and put a Magpul MOE grip in it's place. Also I installed some KAC rail covers on the Bohica rail.

It has a stainless steel single shot Bohica lower and it came with a Jard trigger. This thing is very accurate, so far I've put about 30 trouble free rounds through it. Since I didn't want to purchase old military surplus 50 BMG I went ahead and bought a full LEE reloading set up from Midway. Also I acquired 500 once fired brass locally for $.25 each.

Weidner's had some brand new 690 gr FMJ's on sale so I picked up 500, and I found 1000 API's locally for $125. So far all I have in the way of powder is 2 8 lbs kegs of Hodgdon H50 and 2 8 lbs kegs of US869 plus a few 1 lbs cans of both of those.

I took the scope off and installed a Nikon 6-18x40mm that I received for Christmas. The rail is canted 30 degrees to compensate for long distance shooting. Right now it is sighted dead on at 100 yards, with all of the adjustment taken out of the scope. So I have about 50 MOA of adjustment so I can use my clicks to dope the scope out to the 1000 yard line.

Altough I haven't shot it more than 200 yards yet, I plan on bringing it to the range to build a range card for it.

The only soft case that I could find was a Tac-Force Stryker Drag Bag, it is 62" long and fits my rifle nicley. I got it from Optics Planet...

Here's a couple of pics...

lol, yeah... that's my wife's AR. It has a Daniel Defense 1/7" twist midlength barrel. The lower is a Superior Arms with a Rock River Arms NM lower parts kit and 2 stage NM trigger. The stock set is from Cavalry Arms, and I painted the safety selector and Aimpoint mount with Krylon satin pink. I've also painted 3 GI mags with the Magpul follower upgrade, and am in the process of dying 3 P Mags pink for her.

I brought her and my boys out shooting Saturday and we took pictures of my wife doing mag dumps with her $700 Burberry purse on her shoulder with a pink mag hanging out of the top for tactical reloads...lol ;D

Born and raised South of the I-10 in Lake Charles Luziana... moved to Alaska in the 90's via the US Air Force.

I plan on shooting a Grizzly Bear with this one... I have a spot near my buddy's cabin that I could really reach out there several hundred yards to make it interesting. I bet hitting a deer with one of these is a pretty dynamic death... 'bout like gettin' hit by lightning, lol. ;D

I've never seen ammo for that gun in Academy so I'm guessing you have to load your own.

And if you wound it you'll be able to get there in .... what a half hour? Think he'll be in a better mood by then? A 50 isn't a game hunting round.

A 50 isn't a game hunting round.

That's only if you intend to eat what you shoot.

When I first got the rifle I bought some military surplus ammo at a local gun shop, but they sell Summit & Barrett loaded ammo at Sportsman's Warehouse in Anchorage also...  You are correct though I do roll my own as well!

If you want to get geared up for reloading this beast, I've got a set of NIB RCBS dies and shell holder for sale. $200. That's $100 less than Huntingtons price. I'll be back in Anch.after Memorial Day or PM me.

Clint,

Very nice rifle!  I don't think Mr. Bear will be able to tell much difference between an expanding bullet and a FMJ at the weight & velocity your are throwing at him

Gotta question, how you gettin' along in the 49th state without mudbugs for dinner? ::)

I imagine this would be the only time you would want to gut shoot a deer. Looks like he blood shot several pounds of meat.

You know what, I wrote out a great response to your post, but decided to just let your comment go...

BTW, I never said "hunting", I said "SHOOTING"... there's a difference you know, ask anyone who's ever shot a praire dog or a hog from a helicopter in Texas! As far as I'm concerned you can take your holier than thou hunting ethic posts to a hunting forum... go bother them!

+1 Clint on your response to the "hunting" comment.  I wouldn't mind reading your first response to the poster.

I know. But see, you would be doing that on a HUNTING permit, when, in fact, you would be target shooting. People like you do nothing but feed the anti-hunting and anti-gun mill.

What ever that guy does is his business. The antis hate all 3 of us regardless of what we do or do not do. Actually they would like you a little better,,,, the old divide and conquer bit. In my book if an animal is living and legal it is hunting. If living and illegal it is poaching. And if an inanimate object it is target shooting. I don't hunt a lot of ways others do because I don't think it's fair chase, but that's their business and what I do is mine.

I know one thing-- I'd like to see the video of it

To be honest, I've always wondered why I never hear of 50s being used in Africa.  A lot of walking... shoot no, take'm from the bed of the truck. 8)

is it leagel to use that heavy of a rifle to go after game with ?/  I believe in WY and a few other  states  ,they put a low weight limit to stop people from using the 50 bmg   .

I guess you're right as far as it being his business..... as long as it's legal.  But, take a look at that vid on blowin the side out of that little buck and tell me that guys actually hunting and not just a "want to see what will happen" shot.  If you don't think posting videos like that on the internet where bazillions of people, hunters and non-hunters alike can see what they may construe "true" sportsmen to be like aren't detrimental to hunting you are being mislead.. I'm an ole guy, opinionated and set in my ways I guess, been a life long hunter and shooter and believe it's our "right" to do so.  But to be very honest with you, watching that video I'd like to parry left and vertical buttstroke that guy to the side of the head...just because it's legal, and his business, doesn't make it right. Not trying to start an arguement or offend anyone,  just telling you my gut feelings on seeing that video...
