Canadian Muzzleloader Hunters HELP!!!
« on: May 18, 2010, 03:12:47 PM »
Hope I`m in the right spot for this. We are going to Fort McMurray, Alberta in 2 weeks for spring bear. Found out today cannot take loose powder or pellets on plane. Called the outfitter and told him. He said he didn`t know where to buy powder there because we are the first front stuffers he has had. We stop in Calgary and change planes. Any help would be appreciated. You can reply here or PM me. That would be best. Thanks ???

The Canadian want the business it is your airlines that don't want the black powder.
black lab.

Have the outfitter contact Wholsesale Sport, they are in Alberta and other cities in Canada. He can get the stuff for you since you need to have a Firearm permit to buy ammo or powder. Just let him know exactly what you need.

Give your outfitter all the options you could use just in case they don't specifically have what you need but could make do with ;)

Hey, I got an idea... ::)

Take say 20 45/70 cases, fill them with up with the BP of your choice, then seat a lead .45 pistol bullet in each, hand tight.  When you get there, remove the bullets, pour powder out, and you should have more then enough for the hunt.

BBF, Surely they have 777 you think?
Bigeasy, I thought about that but my better judgement said better not. You get someone who knows just a little bit about guns and they see an inline and loaded bullets= no gun and an orange jump suit.

My understanding, from your original post, is that the airline prohibits loose powder, not loaded ammunition.  Is there a law / regulation that the gun you bring must match the loaded ammo?  Anyway, I would think if your outfitter is worth his salt, he has had black powder hunters before, and can scrounge up some BP for you, a paying customer.

I hope they do as well but play it save, they may only have Pyrodex on hand
 bigeasy:

I believe the original post says that blacklab is the first hunter with ML's for that outfitter. In regards to making up those dummy loads,  if I recall the airlines want ammo in their original package. Isuppose that could be arranged but what a PITA.

PS  I just went to Wholesale's website. They list Triple Seven Magnum pellets ( packet of 50 for about 24 bucks add tax and shipping) and 3 different types of Pyrodex.

Their US addie is properly the one under construction, your Canadian outfitter should have no problems logging on

A guy I know flies up North quite often, he carries his black powder in 45-120 shells with the bullets barely crimped in place and spent primers.  U.S. federal regulations won't allow loose black powder (an explosive) on a plane with passengers; I imagine Canada has the same rules.  If you are using percussion caps, there may be a problem carrying those also, I don't remember for sure.

Let us know what you end up doing!

I hate to say it but any reloading components are a hit and miss thing Wholesale has a Black Board up with what they have in Stock and it changes everyday. Primers are the hardest thing to find their web sight sucks so dont even bother with it and I don't think Bass Pro has had Primers since they opened last year!!
If you need 209s good luck I doubt you will find any 777 Your Outfitter might be able to get you some FFG. The price is no worse than in the States but getting the stuff up here is really hard. Hodgon is the most comon as they have a powder locker in Eastern Canada.
I hate to bring you the Bad news! I waited three Months for them to get some Little Gun in Stock I have a friend that works in the area and would stop in daily to check for me.
Are you Driving up from Calgary to Ft Mac?

I missed the part you change planes other wise I could have possibly met you at the airport and given you some loose Black or caps and primers.
I would do the fill a big case with powder and primers thing.
Call your Outfitter and see if he can find you a pound of powder Hate to have a hunt ruined by not being able to hunt with the gun you want to use.

Not knowing Canada's shipping/postal regulations, any chance of mailing your outfitter the powder ahead of time?

OK everyone , here`s the deal. Got a hold of outdoor essentials in Fort Mac. The lady didn`t have a clue what I was talking about but said I could talk to this guy that buys powder. This was on monday. The guy doesn`t come to work till noon on Tuesday. Well, I got with him yesterday and he has " In stock" 777 50 gr. pellets. So the outfitter is going to pick them up. So you need 4 pellets for 2 bear and that leaves 46 pellets with the outfitter.

Well folks, got back from the bear hunt. Pretty country, good outfitter, everything went well. Saw many bear but none that I thought were shooters. The orders from the wife were a large cinnamon or blonde for a full size mount. Some were there but needed to grow up. The one thing I found interesting was you don`t hunt till 3 PM, then hunt till 10 or 10:30. Sometimes you don`t get back to camp till midnite. All i all even tho no bear it was a great trip.

If you want a Cinnamon bear I would go with the south west part of the Province in the Rocks that's just me I have seen some nice ones wile hiking to high mountain lakes they look like little grizzly's. But they are few and far between and no baiting allowed here in my part. Don't want MR Grizz to get used to it.
I am glad you had a good time up here, see many Moose? I am a Southern boy more used to Elk hunting, and yep once you get North of the Chuck (Edmonton) the sun stay's up longer. Wait till Summer you only really have 3 hours of darkness, fun to bring in the boat at 11:00 after a day's fishing and still be able to see.
