It's obviously one that is more homogenious than the ones I use. (They'd not be so elastic - they would breakup before flexing that much.)

It is amazing as to how much deformation that they go through though.

They shouldn't be deforming that much when struck by a club or fired from a gun, but the real reason they don't fly straight is they are designed not to. The dimples on a golf ball are designed to produce extra lift, accentuating the angle of impact and trajectory of the club head - giving the ball more flight than a smooth faced ball would. Still, for golf ball cannon shooting, I doubt that anyone has tried so long a shot that this has been a significant factor.

The only problem with the information is that 150 mph and 70,000 fps are not equal. On top of that 70,000 fps is not possible.

I saw that too , i think they are talking film speed ,but I dont know how or if the 70000 convertes to some sence .

That ball was going much faster than 150 mph .

70,000 frames per second---easy

My favorite "old school" slo Mo clip is of an F-4 Phanton ,WHICH had a cannon

They slammed it into a reinfoced concrete wall to test for future biuldings .

just gone except for one wing tip that misses the wall and just keeps flying along , look ma no plane !

Rocket sled 400 KTs the wall was fine except for a photo like image of the front view of a Phantom . Photolike

in my youth I used a full 36 pic roll of 35mm film in my camera to try to catch the muzzle flame from an 50 cal 1867 remington rolling block rifle

did I get it ??

On a calm day a mortar firing a golf ball is fairly accurate where a cannon would not be. I think the speed of the ball has a lot to do with accuracy. I'm building golf ball howitzers and I like to try target shooting one to see how it compares with a cannon. The cannon is good to about 200 feet before the ball curves. Howitzer? We shall see...

I wonder if rifling would just cut the cover and the ball would burst as it exited the barrel. I suppose metford rifling would be fine.

The problem with golf balls is getting the same spin on each shot. A smooth bore gives random spin and the spin causes the curved trajectory. When hit properly with a golf club, the ball gets back spin which makes it stay up longer.

They aren't dense enought to be pushed at the speed they are going, and there is no rifling. The turbulance coming off the rear, causes erratic flight. Now bullets are pointed, so are race cars. Can you imaging driving a VW Bug at 120?? Might wobble like a shot golf ball.

Out of my Dom GB Dahlgren, the faster I push, the worse it gets, whereas lead has no problem.

I shot them from my Dom parrott expecting great things ....

If youve ever hit a wiffle ball or practice plastic golfball you'll know why they dont fly right .

They go fast off the club ,but theres nothing behind them no mass ,they flutter about and at any angle .

YMMV ......fox balls rock
