Great Plains Hunter
« on: November 23, 2003, 03:08:05 AM »
I had the great plains rifle and saw where I could get the GP Hunter drop in barrel from Mid-South for $125.00. I got one and started shooting it yesterday. I was using the TC Maxi-hunter 360 grains with 90 G of t7 3f. It was shooting pretty fair after a few rounds but I had to get some padding for my sholder! That thing was flat stomping on my old body. I think a hollow base bullet may be better for this gun. What have you guys found to work in the hunter? Still new a this BP but having a great time with it, if I don't get tossed out of the house!

I t'ink I'd be dropping the charge a bit, somewhere around the caliber to 1 1/2 caliber in grains.  So for a .50 cal, go between 50 and 75 grains of powder.  Or stay with the original barrel and patched round ball, same powder charge.  That has probably taken more deer over the years than those long bullets...

I shoot the round ball in the Great Plains Rifle 1 in 60 twist. I use 75 grain of t7 3f and a530 ball. It works pretty well. The other barrel a 1 in 32 twist is for long bullets. I am looking for the right one for it. Oh yes they are both .54 cal.
