it,s no great feat to hit 5 inch gongs at 300 meters,as a matter of fact its down right boring.i limite the 223 (55gr nosler b.tip)to 300 meters(i know it will go farther), how ever the 260 rem has been shot to 500 meters and 8 inch gongs are not safe(i don,t hit them every shoot) with 139gr hornady. eastbank.

Sounds like you are a LR specialty pistol shooter that is just begging to stretch those barrels some more.
Here is a shoot you need to come to either this year or next.  It is a  lot of fun.

I use a bi-pod myself-I rarely shoot off-hand
The comp is a benchrest shoot--shooting at 500, 750, and 1,000 yards.

at those ranges i would opt for a thompson encore in 7mm mag or 300 win. mag. for killing,if only hitting a target, a 6.5x284. the 260 would go there, but the 6.5x284 would have the edge in drop and wind drift with a good berger bullet. you here about the 600yds .22,s, but it better be a still day. eastbank.

I hunt with single shot specialty handguns chambered in 6.5-284, 6.5WSM, 7mm Short Action Ultra Mag, 7mm Rem Mag Improved, 7mm Dakota, and 338 Lapua magnum Improved.
All have high magnification riflescopes on them and all have excellent muzzle brakes.

There is not a lot of TC handguns that compete at this match, but one fellow with a Contender did quite well the first year at 500 yards.
The roving field course is shot primarily from the prone position.
Laser the steel target, figure your drop and your drift, then see how well you do from a cold bore shot with no wind flags-Sort gives you an idea, how you would do in the field if you were hunting.  Here is some info on it:  http://home.comcast.net/~MOA_Shooters/MOASHOOTERrovingfieldcourseb.htm

Do you dial for your drop, Ballistic Plex reticle, or holding over to hit targets?

range finder and dial in elevation for hunting, on the range(1000 yds) ranges are marked, so just dial in. i have been thinking of mounting a 6.5x20 leupold(i have two) with target turrets on the .260 rem. xp-100r to see how it will do at longer ranges. i have killed 13 deer with handguns, but none at very long range. eastbank.

Do you count clicks or dial MOA when dialing?
Have you used high magnification riflescopes on your specialty pistols yet?

with the flat shooters, clicks. with the pumpkin rollers, moa. with rifles or handguns. not yet ,10x burris err is the highest power so far on handguns, but i think i,m going to try a 6.5x20 leupold of the 260 rem. xp-100r. eastbank.

When I dial, I use MOA, and I never count clicks.
I use 6.5-20's myself on my specialty handguns.

I think I'm going to try a 6.5x20 Leupold of the 260 rem. XP-100r. eastbank.

I would encourage you to get a good brake when you do so.
My favorite is Holland's Radial Quick Discharge.

Ernie,
Just the mention of that .338 Lapua Magnum Improved has my ears ringing and I think I feel the blast in my face.

yes i also think a muzzel brake may be in order, i will shoot it first with double hearing protection, plugs and muffs. i think i,ll have to watch eye relief also with the 6.5x20 due to recoil. i may see if i can add any weight in the xp-100 stock to lessen recoil. what i carry on my 4 wheeler in a home made holster is a 10 inch tc contender in 44 mag with a 2x burris, its a good close range deer pistol (i can shoot pretty good off hand to 75 yds with it). eastbank.

Ken,
The 338 AX isn't bad at all as far as ringing or blast.
I do double up on hearing protection though.

eastbank,
Weight will work besides a brake, or an aftermarket stock may be even better than trying to add weight.
