Need new GPS
« on: May 24, 2010, 04:25:42 AM »
I'm ready for a GPS. I hunt Northern Idaho really close to the Canadian border and the border of Idaho/Montana so need to stay on my turf. I want altimeter, aerial maps, topo's. I hunt hundreds of square miles of national forest and small private acreages. Which one of the above GPS's would best meet my needs. I have a 60CSX on hold at Cabela's but was told they wont do the aerial maps. These 2 look like the most used and recommended. Any other suggestions?
Can someone from experience recommend one over the other?
Thanks for any help!!

Appears that the two in question are missing from the post.

I cannot advise you on the PN40 up front this looks like a good package deal because it includes the maps.  I think you are on the right track looking for information.  The PN40 does have the aerial photo feature but you subscribe to it for a fee.  The down side is the shorter battery life.  If you think you can get into a 24-48 hours in the woods situation you need to carry more sets of batteries.

The 76 Cx and 76CSx have the same operating system as the 60CSx.  I normally have my unit operating at o-dark-30 until safely back at camp or home.  These are long days and batteries have not failed.  Using the Delorme numbers, I would burn two or three sets of batteries.

This is an attractive Delorme deal because it includes the mapping package.

Lloyd has been happy with DeLorme support.  Like to hear his opinion on the aerial photos.

Battery life can be extended on some units by shutting down features.  By using the gps compass and altimeter on some units you can gain hours in the field.  After having the electronic compass and the altimeter for two or three years I believe they are of limited usefulness.  The Garmin ones need calibrating.  The altimeter is a little more difficult because you need a source of information.  A NOAA METAR

This link will give you a lot of weather stations some such as the Sand Point Airport will give you a pressure reading.

Outstanding price find.  Suggest you look at the units if you can find them and see if you like the screens.  Finding the PN40 might be tough.  I think one of the keys is if the user finds the aerial photos  useful on the PN40.  If they are not than they fall in the minus side.

I have been printing the google earth images of areas I hunt.

My boss got the Garmin 60sx? after leaving his Magellan Meridian Gold in a motel room on vacation. I have a Magellan Meridian Gold that I bought when I first hit North Idaho 5 1/2 years ago. I found it helped me get on the right property that I was surveying with a higher confidence level, being totally new to the area. Let's just say he loves his garmin 60sx! and he was OK with the Magellan, except the one he replaced his with (before the Garmin). We print out Google Earth photos and Maptech Topos plus have the topo in the GPS. Put it all together and your good to go and know it.
