got me some 100 gr Hornadys for my .260
« on: May 26, 2010, 12:44:12 PM »
got my bullets today   ;D
pretty good deal, dude let me have em for $20 a box

can't wait to hook em up and get some velocities

should make my .260 a little mean machine.....or an overglorified .243    ::)

and yes I will be shooting broadside boiler room only on deer, headshots on hogs

shouldn't take much to get to 3000 fps

I would be interested to hear how they work for you. I've never used anything lighter than 120's but I've been wanting to try some of the 85-100gr pills.

Worked up a load of 85 grain Sierra in 6.5x55 that shot very well.Can see no reason to think the 100 grain won't do well in a .260.

I have a bunch loaded up in my 264 win mag, they are going about 3450 fps.  They shoot real good.  I loaded them up for coyotes and then have never gone out looking for the son dogs.  oh well, half the fun is working up a load anyways.  Enjoy.

I had one load that was going 3800fps, it started showing pressure signs and it opened up to over 2 inches at 100 yds.  I backed it off quite a bit until I found that sweet spot.

what kind of 6.5x55 are you shooting those 85 gr bullets in?  My Howa won't group constistently with any bullet lighter than 129 gr.
The 120's do okay, but the 100 gr bullets pattern more like a shotgun in my rifle.  I have had acceptably consistent results with the Hornady 129 gr spire points as well as 140 gr Hornady and Speer bullets.

I've had some problems with Hornady 100 gr SP not shooting accurately above 3000 fps in the faster twist 6.5x55 Swedes.  The thinner jackets begin to come undone on  because of the higher RPM just like when some varmint bullets are shot in faster twist .223s.  In the 9" twist of my 6.5-308 (the same as the 260 Rem) they shoot fine max velocities.  If you've a faster tist barrel (7 1/2 -8") then that may be the problem.  The 100 gr Sierra HP does hold up to the faster twist/higher RPM of the Swede though.  I use them over 47 gr Varget for 3250 fps and excellent (1 moa) accuracy in my 6,5 Swedes (M38s).  Work up to that load, as always,  if you are going to try it.

We have been able to do pretty well accuracy wise with 95gr Vmax Hornadys in our .260 Rem 700 VS (was a VLS before stock change).  Not for deer, but the 95's shot well for us.  The rifle routinely shoots less than 3/4' with 123-140gr match bullets.  We got groups in that same range with the Vmax.  So, you should be able to get decent accuracy with the 100s.  Our rifle has a 1-9.5 twist as best we can measure.

The .260 Rem is a fine caliber.  As is the 6.5x55 Swede.  Let us know how you come out with the 100s.
