RCBS seating stems
« on: May 27, 2010, 07:00:59 PM »
Are their pistol-caliber seating stems hardened? Can they be machine-out to allow seating of tipped bullets without deformation?

Thanks, Dinny

Might be a question to ask directly of RCBS.

I don't believe that they are. At least mine are not... I was able to modify a couple thru the years...

Hit one with a file.

If it cuts, you're good to go.  If it skids off, it's hardened and will you need carbide tools to cut it.

Thanks for the info! I, too, have altered one before with the dremel, but I went through several of the stone tips to finish it.

Thanks, Dinny

I had some bullets when I loaded them for a 357 mag the round HP would flatten out and close the HP . I called them and they said send a bullet and they would make a stem to fit it. RCBS is about the best company to work with , its all about solving any problem you have.

I was reading a review on 125-grain Remington .357 HP today.  The review noted that he placed some foil against the bullet seating stem and it prevent damage to the bullet tips.  I came into 500 of the bulk 125 HP the other day and found that review of them timely.  I will try that suggestion when it comes time.

Seems the nose of the bullet is rather soft and the hollow point closes if the loader does not take some sort of action.

Now that you remind me, I did have problems when seating XTPs into the 45LC, the hollow-points were closing on me too.  :-\  I'll post a follow up after I speak to RCBS, maybe they have encountered this before and have a "solve-all" solution.

Thanks, Dinny

When I use the hollow points I expand (bell) the case so it just fits into the seater die so as not to put so much pressure onto the tip and it works out good.
