Golf Ball in my BB Mortar
« on: May 27, 2010, 10:31:50 PM »
I know I have asked this question before but it's the Holliday weekend coming up and I am still trying to figure out what's best.  BB's shoot great and I do not have a problem with them.  My chamber in my BB mortar measures 1.75 " X 2.5"  deep.  Trying to shoot golf balls is an experience in frustration.  I am not sure I am using the correct grade of powder or if the chamber is too big.  Sometimes the golf ball will go into the atmosphere and sometimes it it just goes "putt" and lands 15' away.  I am shooting golf balls in my BB mortar with the aformentioned chamber.  What charge and what grade of powder should I be using?
Normaly I use FFg for the bowling ball and I would prefer Fg for it but it's hard to find. You cannot buy REAL black powder in the Houston area, only fake.  Fake BP works OK for the BB but I think real BP (FFFFg) is better for the golf ball.

Any suggestions?

I would add pics of the mortar but the moderators forbid it.
It is not a true reprouducion.  More like the "Florida BB Mortar"
And golly, look how late its got.
Suggestions for the golf ball would be appreciated

especially with such a short barrel as your chamber is
its not even 1,5 bores deep

have you tried fox balls ??

Several things.

Order in some blackpowder from Powder Inc.  Powder Inc will ship you 5 lbs. Here is their website.  http://www.powderinc.com/ Order Fg or Cannon grade.  Don't get a heart attack when you see Powder Inc's price.  Their price includes shipping and hazmat fee.  Maybe some one like Zulu can tell you a source for Blackpowder in the Houston area...I think he is in Kingwood.

Do not use black powder substitutes in large bore cannons.  Why?  All these substitutes in rifle and pistol use generate higher pressures than equivalent charges of black powder.  Some of them generate substantially higher pressures.  The substitute formulas are for powders small arms quantities. The max load charts for cannons are for black powder, not substitutes. I am unaware of any testing done to establish safe load tables for substitutes in the volume of powder used in cannons.

Most of the substitute black powders require resistance-pull, like from a tight patched ball and crimp of a cartridge to work correctly.  When you use a bowling ball, the weight of the ball is giving you enough resistance allow the substitute to function.  The golf ball does not provide enough resistance to be reliable.  You have found that out.

Get a mortar made to shoot golf balls. When you put the golf ball in the bowling ball powder chamber, the chamber changes from being a mortar chamber to a golf ball cannon-the bore and powder chamber are the same diameter.  If you use a bowling ball charge you are way over charging.  If you use a smaller golf ball size charge it will just lay in the bottom of the bore and not burn right when ignited especially black powder substitutes.  What you describe, sounds exactly like how black powder substitute act in cannons.

Don't use FFFFg is way to fast a burning powder for cannon. It is a priming powder only.

If you built a mortar like the Florida mortar post pictures.  I don't recall telling you to not post pictures of your build.  There were some issues with your powder chamber that concerned me but that was about it.

Hi dougrunnels,
I'm in Cypress where it's hotter than usual too.
I don't know of any place to buy black powder in this area.  I always ordered 1 or 2 cases from a guy in Florida when I was shooting my 10 pounder Parrott Rifle.  UPS will bring 50 pounds right to your door. :o
Go to the site DD gave you.  You can buy smaller increments.

My mistake.  It is NOT like the "Florida BB Mortar.  I used a bi-pod stand for it.  Without a base plate.

I'll bet that was done B4 1898 too ! But I am no lawyer !

IMHO you should be using 2f or 3f without an issuse ...."Puff" is just an issue in short barred cannons .

golf ball in a BB mortar ? thats a good one . ;D

cross sticks are a bipod .
