45 120 Load Data
« on: May 28, 2010, 04:16:31 PM »
TIM,

Can you put this in the right Forum - Reloading.

thanks

Tom

Hi All,

My 32" 45-120 is up and running.  I have found most of the readily available smokeless load data for this caliber.  Anybody have any pet smokeless loads they want to post?  Not looking to push pressure/velocity limits, just stuff that is accurate.   My ultimate goal with this gun is to punch paper at 500 yards.  If you want to PM instead of post that is fine also.

thanks

BB

I use AA's data using 5744 with no fillers, never had any problems with hangfires unlike 60grs Hodgdon H4895, 5744 is accurate too, target was shot at 200yds with 525gr Beartooth Piledrivers using the Williams FP-TK sight, I made a slight sight adjustment after the upper shot.

I had heard that there was very little to be gained with the .45-120 over the .45-70 using smokeless powder.  I can see that this is not necessarily the case, at least with Accurate powders!  I'm still not necessarily ready to have my BC rechambered, but the thought is intriguing.

Nicholst55,

I have a total of five shots down the tube of my 45 120 so no expert here, but the change in recoil alone is worth the rechamber.  I shot 535 grain lyman postels on top of H4198.  I shot this same bullet, on top of 10 grains less H4198, out of this same gun, before the rechamber (45 70) and the gun really slapped me when I shot it.  Now as a 45 120 it was just a big push, no slap.

Tim,

Thanks for the target pic.  I have been looking for 5744 locally for a while now but it has not been available.  I usually end up shooting the Hodgdon powders because they are easier to find.

Note: on the H4198.  I used standard Win LR primers, not magnums, and this powder charge leaves a lot of "air" in the case but the gun still ignited just fine.  Also, no crimp, as I don't have my dies yet.   Maybe a good crimp and the gun will buck a little more?

This rather depends on the rifle that you have chambered for .45-120.

Wouldn't this question be better raised in the forum for the rifle in question?

Mine is an H&R Handi.... I stayed under about 40000psi.... settled on about 4000ft-lb.

I have been using Hawkesbury River cast bullets in 350 and 405, but I just yesterday had it throated to take the 500gn Woodleigh PP's.... so am about to work up some loads for those, after making sure ALL lead fouling is well and truly gone.
