480 ruger six shooters
« on: May 29, 2010, 11:32:10 AM »
gander mtn in huntsville alabama has a 480 ruger for 509. my dad and i both have given it some serious thought but know that ruger has since gone to making 480s in five shot configuration. as i was looking the gun over, it occured to me that the cylinder walls seem awfully thin for the pressure the cartridge pushes. does anyone know how these guns are? is there a safety issue with them?

I owned a SRH in 480 several years ago. It had issues with cases sticking. I polished the chambers and that helped.
I received an offer on the gun that I could not refuse and sold it. I now have a SRH in 454 and love it

There were no safety issues, per say, they just did not sell well in that caliber.

For what its worth....IMHO, I can't imagine any Ruger having a safety issue due to its strength.  As long as they're used for what they're designed for.  The "only" exception that comes to mind would be the newer Vaquaro ( spelling ?  ).  One should be carefull to not load it to full Blackhawk loads.  I believe it was designed for the SASS people.  Maybe someone else can elaberate.

I got a 480 7.5 inch 480 and love it! Now I'm considering having it
customized to handle the 475 in 5 shot and still shoot the 480 for practice.

axehandle, i was there yesterday and it is still there. after looking at the gun and thinking it over i am going to have to pass. those cylinder walls just look too thin for me. the gun sure does feel good though. it is a shame ruger wont make a 5 shot bisley 480.

true. if ruger had built the guns that way from the get go the 480 would most likely be more popular than it is and would probably not suffer the fate that it has.
