single shot

I'm thinking seriously about investing this year's gun money in a Freedom arms single shot.  For those who have one, what has been your experience?   Function ok?   Trigger?  Any info welcome.

Cabelas has one in 223 with a 15" barrel, and Leupold scope for 1899.00.

Bob came by my house for a short visit to show me the first preproduction gun and the new bottle neck round for the FA97. I got to shoot both on my home range and admit both shot way better than me but even I was able to get some nice tight groups.

The single shot is a really nice handgun and unlike hairtrigger I much prefer it to the TC or the XP or any other single shot out there. It has some features quite unique to single shot handguns that are a real plus. I was supposed to get one of the initial production guns for a review but since production started I've not asked Bob to ship me one as I'm just really not physically up to the task of doing a proper review these days.

I would like to have one but would have a hard time deciding what chambering and barrel length of those they chose to offer to select. I shot it with 6.5 JDJ and .357 magnum barrels and really liked the 6.5 JDJ but Bob said they weren't going to offer that and would leave it to JD Jones to do if he decided to. I think that or the 7-30 Waters or even the .257 JDJ would be whats I'd really want and none of those are options offered.

From my time with it here on my range there is no single shot out there I'd chose over it if I were in the market. I do wish they had made more changes to the fore end from what was on the one Bob brought here but for whatever reason they didn't. For me personally the looks of the fore end is the single thing I have misgivings on. I'm sure it wouldn't be a lot of effort to make a different looking one if you are so inclined or to have one made if like me a fellow isn't much of a wood worker.

I hear you on the chambering question.   I'm leaning towards 223, but on the other hand that seems like a pretty common cartridge to put into an uncommon gun.  Maybe the Swede ..... or a 219 Donaldson Wasp.

I shot Bob's original 6.5 X 55 last summer. and just returned from shooting a friend's .375 Winchester. Both shot well, had good triggers, and showed no problems.

While looking for bullets for the 500WE ordered, I viewed the Freedom Arms Steve mentioned. Only having read about it, and seeing the FA video) I was really impressed how balanced it felt. Pictures definitely don't do it justice. The one at Cabela's has a Lovell mount--which, I think matches the gun's contour well. Pretty sure it was a 2x Leupod EER as well.

Though it's off topic, they had a FA 454 7.5" with 4 extra cylinders! Though it seems odd to shoot 45ACP, or for that matter 45 magnum in the FA, you could do it. I was told that some one asked to put it on-hold but didn't actually buy it yet.

For those whom are unsure of which calibre barrel to purchase should investigate a second or third barrel.......

I too have been looking ~ my leaning would be toward the 260 Rem in the longer length tube. It latter could be rechambered to the 260 AI.

I too will buy one when the chamberings are something I "need".
I am looking for a half size gun for IHMSA and want asomething special. I have XP's in 7BR so that is out, the .223 as someone has already mentioned is too common to chamber this gun in. Has Bob given any inkling into what else he is thinking of caliber-wise? I will buy two barrells to justify the expense as I can half the cost "per gun" to make it a little more palatable. Plus sending the action back to Freedom Arms from New Zealand is a risk I would rather not take. Peter.
