Yesterday I took a beautiful whitetail doe weighing in at 150 lbs field dressed with my black powder rifle.

At 225 feet, through my Traditions E-bolt, with 295 Gr. Powerbelts, atop 100 grains of Triple 7 in FFG I put the bullet straight thru both lungs and the heart...now that is a shot!!!  The deer still managed to do about 100 feet before she lay to a final rest.

I am extremely happy with the precision level which I have reached with this rifle.  When you find the right combination it is always very satisfying.  I had managed repeated bulls-eye shots at the range with this combination in the past weeks, but these were under ideal conditions at the range...far from a live hunting situation hunting...but it worked out just fine.

This is the third whitetail I take with this rifle....and to tell you the truth it really has grown on me...I have all sorts of other rifles in my collection, but the smokepole has become a true favorite even during rifle season.

I know that for purists, my combination may have a ring of travesty to it...but it works for me and I love it......is'nt that what it's all about?

I am a purist or traditionalist - and if you shot that deer at 225 feet, all I can say is great shot and enjoy your winter meat.  I hope that you have many more years with your rifle and that all your shots are in the X ring.


Oh Yea! since you love that rifle soooo much, give me your address and I'll come over and help you throw away those other old ugly guns that you don't need anymore :grin:

YOU TOOK OUT THE HEART???  What's the matter with you?  That's some of the best eating, and you destroyed it.  Congratulations are in order, regardless.  

Are you keeping track of how far your shots are?  Over time I bet you'll find the vast majority are under 100 yards...

Rifles you are successful with take on a value and character all their own.  It's not just a BP rifle anymore, it's the fond memories of the hunt as well.  That was a fine shot so enjoy your success.

I forgot to mention.....oops....

This was the first time the wife came out with me on a hunt...and she actually liked the experience.....I was scared that she may find the whole thing a little too graphic, but she enjoyed the thrill of the hunt....and get this....she thought that burnt T7 smelled good.....no kidding!

A truely good day was had...

Keesvw2002...I always keep track of the shots I take and you are correct that all of them have been within 100 yards...it is a comfort limit for me...after seeing the bullet perform the way it did on this deer (entry and exit were quite impressive) I am sure that this combination could probably stretch it's legs, but I like it just the way it is and I plan on keeping it within those ranges...I dunno about the rest of you, but I find targets pretty darn small out at 200 yds...even with a 3-9X scope...maybe it's just me....

Strike while the time is ripe.  Christmas is comming.  Get that woman a muzzle loader and enjoy the experience.  My wife hunts with me and we have had some of the best conversations while sitting in a blind or walking a field of new snow.
