Don't like the Thunderbolts.
« on: June 01, 2010, 02:29:53 PM »
I went out red squirrel hunting today with the versa 22 with some Remington Thunderbolts (40gr. lead round nose). They shoot good out of my gun but I didn't like the performance on squirrels. I shot a good sized red sitting on a limb about 20 ft. up... he ran down the limb and started twitching his tail... I thought I had missed so I shot him again... he fell off the limb and down onto the ground... I went up to check him out and there was 2 holes through him with intestines poking out the holes. There was just 2 holes straight through him with very little expansion. I have shot lots of reds with 36gr. hollow points and it just about turns them inside out with a body shot. I'll use the Thunderbolts for target shooting but I'm sticking to hollow points for game. :) :)

Thats pretty much been the report through the years with RN. Used to be that you could get a 'sizer' from Paco Kelly that would bump the bullet dia up a tad ( to fit a field chamber more like match ammo does in a match chamber) and would also put a flat nose on it. They have been said to make it a better hunting bullet profile as well as make some 'cheap' ammo behave more like the much more expensive stuff.
A creative fellow with a lathe and some reamers could make one up easily.
