Screw in choke

I am new to the shotgun forum, I mostly stay in the rifle forums but I have a question.

I am buying an H&R 12ga 3" that has been shortened to around 19".
Is there enough barrel thickness to be threaded for screw in chokes?

I sent my "shorty" to Colonial Arms and had it threaded for Baikail/Spartan (Remington) chokes.Works great.Have several extended ported
tubes and a rifled slug tube.They are on the www and are located in Alabama.

Only the tube manufacturer/installer can tell you for sure, but my guess is there shouldn't be a problem.

Colonial also makes special tubes that can be fitted to some thinner than average barrels if the standard tubes won't work.

don't remember where i read it, maybe brownell's? but i'm pretty sure that the minimum diameter to install win-chokes in a barrel is .850in and win-chokes are .812in so i'm guessing that a topper barrel would be plenty thick enough.  for what it's worth, bubba.

I am planning on doing the same thing.  I have a 3" NEF 12 ga that I paid $75 for at a pawn shop.  I am going to chop the barrel to 1/2" over legal, have it threaded for rem chokes, and a scope rail silver soldered on.  I will then cut the gun's overall length to 1/2" over legal.  My plan is to have a nice versatile shorty that I can use a rifled choke and a red dot scope for deer and use a turkey choke and 00 Buck for Yotes and other critters with having a small compact gun easy to tote around on the tractor or atv.....  My local smith quoted me $100 to do the work plus the cost of the choke tubes.

just had my full length modified choke barrel threaded for win-chokes and it was plenty thick enough. i had my own h.s.strut turkey choke so my guy was gonna charge $25.00 but waived that as i delivered some parts to another guy for him . for what it's worth, bubba.

Just got back from meeting Bob (Foggy) to finish the deal.
Really a nice guy to talk to.
Only got to spend about 15 minutes with him.
We met along side the road.
Don't want to wave a gun around to much in open places like that.  
Got home and tried it out with some 3" # 4 buck loads.
She does kick a little!  
Shoot pretty good out to about 30yds but is starting to open up quit a bit by then with the full cylinder bore.
The screw in chokes will tighten that up.
There is plenty of metal for threading.
Afterwards I measured the barrel and it is just legal, 18.75".
The smith did a very nice job.
Looks really neat.
Should make a very "Handi" groundhog gun when riding around with my buddy in his gator.
I think I have another keeper!

A bit of advise, if you have another shotgun, that uses chokes, Id try and see if you can thread it the same.

I did that with one of mine, I threaded it for win choke system that way I wont have to buy all those chokes again to see if they are the one that works.
Patterning is spendy, but fun (sometimes painful  )

With all the Winchesters I have Win choke is the only way I will go.

I did get my first kill with the new shorty this morning.
Went over to check the garden and a old female groundhog was trying to get through the garden fence.
Hit her at about 25 yds with 2.75" #4 buck.
Stopped her but didn't get the job done.
Had to hit her again.
That cylinder bore at that distance is just to open.
Should have tried 3".
I have got to find a smith that does choke work.

I had a remingtion 870HD that i had chokes installed, cost about 45 bucks.

a good smith should be able to get it done.
