Groups/Zeroing with .270 barrel
« on: June 02, 2010, 07:06:28 PM »
So for the last 3 days I've been working on load development with my Pro-Hunter .270 barrel. I am using Remington brass, Nosler 130gr Accubond, H1000 and Fed 210 primers.
My bullets are seating just off the lands. The problem I'm having is my groups just won't tighten up. My loads were 61grs, 62.5 & 64grs.
Today with a 5 shot group I had 2 holes touch above the bullseye, 2 touch below and one flyer @ 100yds.
I am shooting from a prone supported position.    Now, with a Remington 130gr CL seated just under the cannellure and 62grs of H1000 I had 3 holes touching at 100. These were meant to be my practice/get on paper after bore-sighting rounds. Now with the Accubonds these were to be my deer loads. Can anyone offer any advice?
Cheers  Thanks,

Huntsman  ???

Seating your bullets just off of the lands is just a place to start. Not all rifles are the same. Your bullet seating depth is like the the BOSS that they used to put on Winchesters and Brownings.
When you fire, your barrel makes a whipping motion. The optimum accuracy is at the top or bottom of the wave, therefore not all rifles shoot thier best with the same bullet seating depth. Barrels are all individuals.
It is like primers. Why in the heck would you get different accuracy with changing primers? I'm not sure but that is a fact.
Keep trying you will find a accurate combo.

Yes, I can offer you some advice; use the Remington Core-Lokts.  For further information, read here:

You know sumth'n Grumulkin..My thoughts exactly..why try to fix what ain't broke.  And you know the funny thing...I got awesome groups with my Win 88 .308 with 42grs Varget and a 165gr Rem CL, I was achieving true clover leafs @ 100yds..I then tried getting the same groups with Sierra 165 GK..and Hornady 165 IL with no luck.
BTW, Thanks for the link.
Looks like I'll be sticking to Remington Core Lokts.  Besides, they're cheaper.
