My GPS is a mess
« on: June 04, 2010, 03:07:11 AM »
It gets that way now & again and it is a simple matter to purge out the seldom used waypoints.

Some are important on my hunting ventures and I will save them electroniclly on mapping software or even print and save maps with extra detail added.

The problem is that when I get too many entry's, it is just like if one would use the entire root directory, or C:\Drive on ones PC to store files verse saving the same in Folders.

That is what I need, The ability to create Folders in my GPS unit to store waypoints in as it is far better to look at a short folder list than a Looong list of the waypoints. I can create routes of course (19 separate) but still have all the clutter on the main screen.

My cell phone has the ability to create folders or icons for all of the trash in general. Does a newer model GPS have the same capability?

The internal memory has increased with the latest Garmin gps units.  The newest units allow up to two thousand waypoints.  I realized early on that I need to manage my waypoints by putting them in categories.  My current handheld units have a good selection of waypoint symbols that identify different waypoints.  Of course one always wishes for more.

I have four or five points that I camp during hunting season.  I use the green tent symbol as a file header for my campsites.  I like the buck symbol for waypoints related to deer.  The one I use the most is the fish symbol when out trolling.

Currently I have 233 waypoints out of a possible 1000 on my Rino 530HCx.  I recently saved all my waypoints in a folder on my computer using Map Source.  I then did some house cleaning.  I create a lot of waypoints when out fishing.  On a busy day I create a lot of waypoints, some of them close together.  I keep key fish symbol waypoints, but reduce clusters from a day’s fishing to one or two for a general location.  I also cleaned out some waypoints when I delete a couple of routes.

From a function level I go to main menu on the Rino > Find Icon> Waypoints> the Select by Symbol option, and pick the symbol I want.  A list of the symbols I selected appears.  I want the buck symbol and the related waypoints appear nearest first.  I have a couple pop up that are over 42 miles away called Hog and Pig.

I save all my waypoints to dated folders on my computer using Garmin’s Map Source.  If I need waypoints from an old trip I can retrieve them.  It takes a little work but I manage.

I use the Skull and Cross bones for mine shafts and points of land that present a hazard to boating as the level of a reservoir goes up and down.

If I was to use a symbol for these guys in the backyard yesterday I would have used the buck symbol.

Had the back deck rebuilt last year and the bars are to keep the great grandkids on the deck.  About a eight foot drop to the ground.

The two bucks were born out by the woodpile three years ago.  At first thought the smaller one was a little doe, but by late fall both of them had buttons.

The picture is about 24-hours after birth.  The doe looks a little rough after producing a couple of twins.

The other morning I went out on the back deck at about 0600 and the small buck went busting out from under the deck.  Gave me a start, but I enjoy watching them.

Nice pictures Siskiyou and nice to have around for the watching.

Thanks for the tip, not a whole lot of bells n whistles on my old unit but I believe that I can catagorize by the symbols. Thanks
